Coles Says Jets Lied to Him

I love LC and would love to see him resigned. Let me remind everyone that the Jets drafted him and gave him time to develop even after no one wanted him because of the FSU Dilliard's incident and a battery charge. This is business folks. I can think of dozens of players recently who said that they were done wrong with contract negotiations, some on the Skins. The Jets offered to guarantee, yes a guarantee in the middle of his contract, for 2 years $11 million. Now that is rare and is far from 'cheap.'

Everything Coles says is true -- he's been a good player, a good leader, a guy who will play hurt. But he's hardly been underpaid. He's averaged about $5.5 million a year since the expiration of his rookie contract while averaging about 950 receiving yards a season and is scheduled to be paid as a top 15 WR in 2008. In two years, his best seasons will be behind him and extending him and giving him a raise is not prudent.

Coles is as tough as they come, but you Skins fans know all about the whining. He DEMANDED a trade after not being a big part of the Gibbs offense in 2004. Prior to that in 2003, he admitted to leaving the Jets "because the Redskins offered him more money." Where was HIS loyalty then?

Did the Jets lie, who knows?AS far as football is concerned He has never been underpaid,he has never been happy anywhere he has gone and sure as hell has never been a team leader,he complains about something anything no matter where he goes.
I don't understand your post ,you say everything he says is true and then you make a case against it????

36 posts on this thread and no one has hit the real meat of this story. Coles isn't complaining that he's underpaid. He's complaining that the Jets lied to him and misled him about their intentions, stringing him along and repeatedly putting off an extension. If they promised him an extension, then praised him for his toughness and selflessness, then state their reason for not signing him as lack of production... that's pretty bogus if you ask me. Especially coming from a team with huge QB issues, and poor running game, and a lousy offensive line. It's not like he stunk up the joint with Peyton Manning throwing to him. Clemens is totally unproven and Pennington couldn't throw a football through a wet paper towel.

Coles is a leader on that team and the one constant on an otherwise anemic offense. They should resign him. He and Cotchery are a pretty good tandem. Bottom line is the Jets are cheap.
He still has two years left on his deal why would the Jets extend his deal at this time? Maybe next year he has something to complain about but not with two years left. If he thought his numbers would increase over the next two years do you think he would be complaining about a new deal?

My point is the Jets were either intentionally misleading him or putting him off. Most likely both. And that's a shitty thing to do to a team leader (he is on the Jets btw, although not here in Wash) who leaves it all on the field every Sunday, hurt or not. It's not like he's a fringe player or a bad apple. He can go vertical, over the middle, block, play hurt, has strong hands... Look, Coles is a great player. Underrated. And the Jets are apparently doing him dirty. That's all I'm saying. I never once said he's underpaid.

Poor Coles. I liked him as a Redskin. I think he needed a good Doc. to fix his toe and stay off of it. In any event, didn't he leave the team bad mouthing the owner and organization? Didn't he say something along the lines of " I should never have left the Jets" also. Have fun Coles enjoy the team you should have never left.

Poor-Coles-My-Ass. This guy is a bum. He doesn't deserve Brandon Lloyd money, wait....neither did Lloyd.

Didn't this guy want out of Washington in the worst way? And didn't he bend us over with the money that we had to pay him? No thank you Coles! Stay with the Sh*tty Jets!

That's a lame response. A bum? Did you really compare him to Brandon Lloyd? Do you watch football?

Over the past three seasons Coles has 219 catches, 2589 yards, and 17 touchdowns. That's an average of 73 catches, 863 yards, and about 6 TDs a year. Are those "bum" numbers? He played hurt in all of '07 (no doubt he's tougher than Santana the Hammy), and is one season removed from a 91 catch 1100 yard campaign in '06 when he was healthy with a steady QB.

Over that same span, Santana has 200 catches, 3081 yards, and 18 TDs. Almost identical, although Moss has barely eclipsed 800 yards receiving since his stellar '05 season.

Regardless, they have almost identical numbers since swapping teams, although overall the past two seasons Coles has clearly outplayed Moss, in yards, catches, and touchdowns. So is Moss a "bum" then too?

I don't know why this is so hard for everyone to see. He was made to believe something by the Jets front office, and now they're clearly reneging on whatever it was. Is this so hard to believe after what they did to Pete Kendall? Hell, we were direct recipients of the deceit of the Jets FO in that case. Coles isn't pulling a Latrell Sprewell here. He's simply saying he was assured something, and has given enough to the Jets over the past three years to earn what they promised him.

So he wasn't happy in Washington. I guess that automatically makes him a bad guy and we should trash him, right?

Maybe Coles assumed that when the Jets said they would take care of him he was thinking contract extension and the Jets where thinking guaranteeing his money. We do not know and we only have Coles side of the story but his history tells us something. Jets gave him his chance, he bolted for more money, skins gave him more money, he did not get the catches so he bolts again. Both times ragging on the team he left. Coles has talent but it seems he wants every thing his way and if that does not happen then he complains.

What you're saying is true. Coles kind of has set his own precedent. But so did the Jets with the Pete Kendall thing. Coles said he wants to know where he's going to spend the rest of his career. To me that means he was promised an extension, not just guaranteed money. Whatever. No one will ever know. Coles is a complainer but he sure as hell doesn't slack on the field. Based on the Kendall thing, I kind of believe Coles.
