In honor of my 5,000th post on this site, I decided to hit the old stat sheet to see just how close some current Redskins are to breaking historic records.
Let's start with Clinton Portis. At age 26, Portis has 7715 yards, which trails' Emmitt Smith's pace of 8956 yards through age 26 and 6 NFL seasons by a mere 1200 yards. Portis would likely catch Smith if he played as many seasons as him, which would require Clinton to play at a high level for another 9 years.
Chris Cooley has 231 catches in 4 years. The all time leading receiver at the Tight End position is Shannon Sharpe, who had 815 career catches. Sharpe had 250 catches through age 26, when he had 5 pro seasons. Sharpe would go on to play nine more seasons, but never catching more than 80 in a single season from that point forward.
The all time record for safeties is 4, held by Ted Hendricks and Doug English. While the safety is a rare play, defensive standout London Fletcher needs only two more to tie Hendricks and English.
Shaun Suisham has connected on 82% of his field goal attempts, tied for tenth all time. A great 2008 campaign in which he connects on 91%+ could catapult the Canadian born kicker past Nate Kaeding on the all time FG % list, currently set at 86.67%.
Keenan McCardell could catch Bruce Matthews on the games started list should he play to the age of 49.
Antwaan Randle El has ammassed 2,145 punt return yards thus far. Only 3,854 more to catch B. Mitch. Mitchell had 2,196 PR yards at this point in his career, and only led the NFL once during it. Mitchell returned punts to the age of 35, and ARE likely would have to do the same to catch him.
And finally, Jim Zorn is a mere 328 career victories away from catching Don Shula as the all-time winningest coach in NFL history.
Thought that this could be a fun little post. Here's to another interesting 5,000.
