I think it was definately Snyders intention to hire Jim Fassel, but after witnessing the extreme backlash form his fan base he realized he had to do something different.
It was said that Snyder was impressed by what went on in Seattle as as result of our two playoff apearences there during Gibbs II. Maybe this is a classic case of "If you can't beat um, join um". I like the move though, and am interested in seeing just what else in involved as far as staff is concerned.
Yes, I think you are right. Jim Fassel would have been hired if Snyder and Cerrato could have gotten away with it, but it would have been a public relations disaster, and they knew it. Everything would have pointed back to them, and they would have born the brunt of it.
So, despite the mockery to the contrary, the fans do have a voice, and a website like this has influence because it lets the fans express that voice.
By playing their role, the fans forced Snyder and Cerrato to reconsider their options. Humbled, Snyder's better side came out and he remembered the strong impression Jim Zorn's character made on him. The same side of Snyder that was impressed by Joe Gibbs from a personal standpoint probably influenced him to choose Zorn.
