I think there are one of two possibilities as to what exactly happened.
1.) Snyder knew if he let Williams go he'd be a hot commodity and probably snatched up by some other team looking for a head coach (Falcons maybe), and most-if not all-of his new contract would still be paid for by the Redskins. So Snyder left him hanging until all other jobs were taken.
or
2.) Snyder and Williams have never had a strong relationship, made worse over the past couple of years. Yet Gibbs served as a buffer to the two of them. And once Gibbs left, the two of them (Williams and Snyder) knowing that Gibbs wish apparently was for Williams to assume the reigns tried desperately to make it work. Hence the three or four very lengthy interviews. But ultimately their differences were simply too much.
If you're right, I'm really hoping it was the latter. For it to just be about money would be pretty shitty after what Williams did for the team. But I certainly wouldn't put it past Danny.

What's better for the franchise? Having a fan favorite coach that the owner doesn't trust and therefore will be meddlesome, or bring in a new hire that the owner trusts and will stay out of the way of the coaching?
I wanted to see Gregg Williams as HC and I'm upset with the way our organization handled this situation based on the info I've read, but GW will be given more opportunities elsewhere (Tenn.?/ St. L?) and my loyalties are with the Redskins not a particular player or coach.

Upon further reflection, I think money isn't/wasn't an issue at all. When has he ever worried about guzzling money away

Yes, if it Snyder knew he didn't want Williams from the beginning and wanted to save a few bucks, he would have released him earlier when there were more jobs available (and the probability of him getting one would have been greater).

Yeah, he's always kind of had the "money is no object" approach. I wonder if it bothers him that Six Flags is trading at $1.78/share. Eeesh.

I wonder what the reaction would have been here had this happened last year after Williams' (and the defense's) dismal 2006 season

....and I wonder what would happen if a solar flare hit the earth and burned all of life on earth. I mean cmon dude the guy is a damn good coach. If fans were pissed after 2006 for him having one bad year compared to his level of work as a coordinator in Tennessee, Buffalo, and Washington then they werent very knowledgeable fans. People love to knock Gregg Williams but at least he coached the team and called plays on defense. Last time I checked Joe Gibbs was a HOF head coach and gave up his playcalling duties after the 2005 season. When that happened I wondered why he was even still coaching because he was basically a figurehead. Yet everyone backed him even me because we knew he was a winner and he does what is best for the team. Thats the reason why Gregg Williams was here for those 4 years because Gibbs knew Gregg Williams is a damn good defensive coordinator. Too bad Dan Snyder dont realize how good of a coach Gregg is.
