Hey Folks,

Almost every thread I’ve been reading all I’ve heard is how terrible of an owner Snyder is and how he’s dooming the franchise. Let me start by saying that I do want Greg Williams as our next head coach and I haven’t totally given up hope for that to happen yet. I think Zorn would be a great O coordinator, and I hate the choice of Ryan at DC, and I think Fassel is an awful hire. That said, everyone take a step back and a deep breath and look at this with some sense.

First of all, from all accounts Greg Williams has been the difficult one, not Snyder. Williams wants a lot of control over the team and personnel. While I feel coaches should have a slight say in these issues, I think this is a full time position in and of itself to make such decisions. There are even rumors that Williams declined an offer extended to him by Snyder. Perhaps Snyder just doesn’t want to give up that type of power to Williams – this is something that makes sense and I totally understand.

Back to Vinny. Everyone was crying for a GM, and was there any doubt that if a GM position opened up Vinny would be the man for it? Snyder loves him, Gibbs seemed to have a good relationship with him, and has he really done that bad of a job? Vinny has been the scapegoat of the franchise since he showed up, however he hasn’t done that poorly. He did okay in San Fran, and we’ve found some great late round gems and we’ve been very accurate with our first round picks, something a lot of teams can’t brag about. There are much worse personnel people in the NFL than Vinny Cerrato. He’s not the best, and he’s not the worst. He’s average, and there’s finally a GM position in our franchise.

I think Zorn is a great choice at OC. I was a big fan of Saunders, but I don’t think his offense works well with the type of team we have now. I’d love to see us implement a west coast hybrid offense. With someone who throws the deep ball like Campbell and the burners we have it’s important to go deep from time to time, but the NFL is a passing league now, and short passes can take the place of the running game now. The west coast offense will work well for our team in my opinion.

I really don’t like the choices of Fassel and Rex Ryan (especially since we’d have to give up draft picks for Ryan) but I’m sure there’s a reason why these guys are floating to the top. Snyder seems as if he’s been very thorough on this process and there’s so much information missing from us, the fans, that we can’t even begin to make an educated guess about what’s going on behind the scenes.

I guess my point is this, we can’t automatically sit here and blame Snyder for everything that happens. Would you be happy if he gave full control to Williams? What are Williams’ demands? Just remember, everything isn’t what it seems from our vantage point. We’re looking for someone to blame for Williams not already being named our head coach – but that blame may itself be on Williams and not Snyder. We don’t know.

If The Danny decided that he couldn't coexist with Gregg Williams, then I'm fine with him looking elsewhere. That said, I think he can do a lot better than Fassel. He could have been bold and gone for Jason Garrett or the Tennessee D-coordinator - young guys that could be your coach for the next 15 seasons. At best, I only see Fassel as a 4-5 year stopgap that will require us to make yet another change in a few short years. A Fassel hiring doesn't smell of long term stability to me.

I certainly agree about Zorn, he will be great for Jason Campbell.

Excellent post. I think at this point it's pretty obvious by the whole 4 interviews thing that GW and The Danny were pretty far apart on what direction to go with the team. I think GW is a relatively difficult guy. Apparently he didn't get a long with a lot of folks in Buffalo, and he buts heads with Vinny and Al.

I think on paper Fassel is a better head coaching candidate than Williams. But better enough to clean house? Not so sure about that.

Daseal, I would like Williams hired as well but I have always been an advocate that successful teams seperate the coach from the GM. History has shown that when a coach is also GM it brings about the conflicting issue of win now versus building for the future and also time constraints and job demands become that much more demanding. If Williams demanded to also have full control on personelle issues I would be against that, but if all Williams was asking for was to bring in a GM like Floyd Reese to take over for Cerrato than I would be quite diappointed if Synder didn't agree because Reese is a well respected GM.

One thing that has been said with Vinny being promoted - it now puts the pressure squarely on his shoulders. If the teams makes some huge blunders on things like trades and drafts, there will no longer be the "we made all the decisions together approach". I actually like that the team now has a peaking order to the decision making and we can squarely put blame and praise on front office moves on someones shoulders.

No more hiding behind personnel "decisions by consensus". I'm not overly confident, but I hope that Vinny proves us wrong and kicks ass in his new position.

I think you've presented one possible scenario here and I appreciate the thought that went into it. It's a good counter scenario to some of the fears that seem to be in line with the facts we DO have, that a number of folks including myself have.

It's every bit as speculative as the so-called "doom and gloom" scenarios, though, and you could make a pretty convincing argument that Snyder hasn't really earned the benefit of the doubt in these kinds of situations, but ultimately all I care about is the process and the organization is going about this in the right way.

Daseal, are you sure we would have to give up draft picks to get Ryan? I'm just asking because I have no clue how the "compensation" works. Would it be draft picks or money?

Does anyone know how that would work? I just think it would be ridiculous to give up draft picks for a coordinator. But you never know....
