Hey Folks,
Almost every thread I’ve been reading all I’ve heard is how terrible of an owner Snyder is and how he’s dooming the franchise. Let me start by saying that I do want Greg Williams as our next head coach and I haven’t totally given up hope for that to happen yet. I think Zorn would be a great O coordinator, and I hate the choice of Ryan at DC, and I think Fassel is an awful hire. That said, everyone take a step back and a deep breath and look at this with some sense.
First of all, from all accounts Greg Williams has been the difficult one, not Snyder. Williams wants a lot of control over the team and personnel. While I feel coaches should have a slight say in these issues, I think this is a full time position in and of itself to make such decisions. There are even rumors that Williams declined an offer extended to him by Snyder. Perhaps Snyder just doesn’t want to give up that type of power to Williams – this is something that makes sense and I totally understand.
Back to Vinny. Everyone was crying for a GM, and was there any doubt that if a GM position opened up Vinny would be the man for it? Snyder loves him, Gibbs seemed to have a good relationship with him, and has he really done that bad of a job? Vinny has been the scapegoat of the franchise since he showed up, however he hasn’t done that poorly. He did okay in San Fran, and we’ve found some great late round gems and we’ve been very accurate with our first round picks, something a lot of teams can’t brag about. There are much worse personnel people in the NFL than Vinny Cerrato. He’s not the best, and he’s not the worst. He’s average, and there’s finally a GM position in our franchise.
I think Zorn is a great choice at OC. I was a big fan of Saunders, but I don’t think his offense works well with the type of team we have now. I’d love to see us implement a west coast hybrid offense. With someone who throws the deep ball like Campbell and the burners we have it’s important to go deep from time to time, but the NFL is a passing league now, and short passes can take the place of the running game now. The west coast offense will work well for our team in my opinion.
I really don’t like the choices of Fassel and Rex Ryan (especially since we’d have to give up draft picks for Ryan) but I’m sure there’s a reason why these guys are floating to the top. Snyder seems as if he’s been very thorough on this process and there’s so much information missing from us, the fans, that we can’t even begin to make an educated guess about what’s going on behind the scenes.
I guess my point is this, we can’t automatically sit here and blame Snyder for everything that happens. Would you be happy if he gave full control to Williams? What are Williams’ demands? Just remember, everything isn’t what it seems from our vantage point. We’re looking for someone to blame for Williams not already being named our head coach – but that blame may itself be on Williams and not Snyder. We don’t know.
