Longtimefan 01-21-2008, 05:30 PM Not if it's so stipulated in his contract that he is to become the successor in the event Dungy steps aside. firstdown 01-21-2008, 05:31 PM They have to interview a white guy. Landryisabeast30 01-21-2008, 05:39 PM Well the Colts dont have to worry about that because he's going to come back next season, said ESPN. Paintrain 01-21-2008, 05:45 PM No, the Rooney rule stipulates that a minority candidate must be interviewed as part of the process. In Indy's case, no other interviewees are required. mlmpetert 01-21-2008, 06:18 PM Rooney Rule - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooney_Rule) "However, the rule does not apply if an assistant coach has language in his contract guaranteeing him the starting job in case of an opening. " Didnt know you had to have a guaranteed clause in your contact, just thought if they went with anyone in house the rule didnt apply. hooskins 01-21-2008, 06:36 PM Dungy is coaching next year at Indy. IggyG 01-21-2008, 07:49 PM I think the Rooney rule is ridiculous! If a an owner wants to hire a coach that is white he shouldnt have to interview a minority. A good coach is a good coach. Whether he'd be black, white, hispanic, jewish, blue, green, orange...it doesnt matter. Hire who you want without any stipulations is what I say. sportscurmudgeon 01-21-2008, 11:50 PM If the Rooney Rule were REALLY about hiring/interviewing minorities in all coaching searches, then the Colts would be required to interview a minority other than a Black man if Caldwell is their anointed successor. Shouldn't they be required to interview an Asian Pacific Islander? There are players of that ethnicity in the league but not a whole lot of head coaches of that ethnicity. The Rooney Rule is not about "minorities"; it is merely stated that way to make it less offensive. rypper11 01-22-2008, 09:29 AM I think the Rooney rule is ridiculous! Whether he'd be black, white, hispanic, jewish, blue, green, orange...it doesnt matter. Hire who you want without any stipulations is what I say. I like the Rooney Rule. I think that it has helped good black coaches gain some experience in the interviewing process which has helped them land jobs on staffs and ultimately get HC jobs. I would like the rule expanded to say that at least 5 people must be fully interviewed and at least one be a minority (though not all). This would help the NFL overall to find new guys instead of the same retreads just switching teams and getting fired 3 -4 years later. Most guys aren't hired as HC for the first job they interview. What I do hate is the outcry over the number of black coaches in the NFL overall. The typical argument is that in a league where the players are predominately black, the coaches should be too. However, in this country the general population is still majority white (for now). Time and time again we have seen that the best coaches aren't the best players. Spurrier played in the NFL, but Gibbs didn't. Who is the better HC? A few good coaches have played in the league (though I believe Dikta is the only one to win a Super Bowl as player and coach, Reeves coached in SB's but didn't win). Neither SB coach played in the league (though Belichick's dad did). So it would stand to reason that the percentage of blacks and whites in coaching should be proportional to the general population, not to the percentages of players. |
