Longtimefan 01-19-2008, 11:34 AM Dan Snyder has stated he learned a great deal from his association with Gibbs during his second tenure here. I'm left to wonder if he learned what made Gibbs so successful here the first time, aside from inheriting a pretty good team. The man responsible for that success no longer resides in Washington, and before attempting to hire a coach he should make an honest attempt to find an equivilant to that talent. I would feel more comfortable with someone who knows something about football selecting a coach than a big ego, with an open wallet. Him picking coaches scares the hell out of me.
Daseal 01-19-2008, 12:02 PM Maybe it is a head coach currently in the league. Someone we'd be willing to give up compensation for. A jeff Fisher, etc.
Also, Sirius 2 days after Gibbs left mentioned Marty. Said Snyder and Marty buried the hatchet when someone related to Marty got cancer. Snyder pulled strings to get them to the best specialists, let Marty and his family use the private jet, etc.
That Guy 01-19-2008, 12:12 PM the best coach in the league (after BB) is jeff fisher (who we have no chance of getting, but he's better than GW). after that, you've got a guy like marty or GW's second chance, and not much else.
skinsguy 01-19-2008, 12:36 PM Other than Gregg Williams, I'd certainly welcome Marty Schottenheimer back into the fold. Daniel Snyder was way too hasty in getting rid of him the first time. I think Marty would be inheriting a really good team, better than what he did previously. With that said, we could really see the Redskins being at least a constant playoff team year in and year out.
Someone else mentioned Jeff Fisher. That is another guy I wouldn't mind coaching the Redskins, but I think he has signed an extension with the Titans. Mike Holmgren? The guy also knows how to coach and he has a Super Bowl ring. He's built a constant winner in Seattle, and we all know how successful he was in Green Bay. That's another guy I would not mind seeing as head coach.
For some of the other names...Dennis Green, Dennis Erickson, Jim Mora, Jr, the only one I'd take from those three would be Jr. Green was successful for awhile in Minnesota, but his coaching stint in Arizona kind of soured me on him. Dennis Erickson has so far been a dud at the NFL head coaching level.
Other names that have been mentioned that are surpising, but I never could imagine theses guys coaching the Redskins: Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson. Both are ex-Cowboys coaches and that just doesn't seem like good karma (if you believe in karma.) I was never really that impressed with Switzer. I realize he won a SB with the Cowboys, but heck, Johnson had given him the keys to a ferrari. It's not like Switzer had to build that team any. I've always respected Johnson. He's one heck of a coach. However, he couldn't repeat the same success in Miami that he had in Dallas. Let us also mention that he's been gone from the game (except for being on a pregame show) for quite awhile now. I just wouldn't see it working out with him.
I still believe Gregg Williams will be our next head coach and all this other interviewing coaching candidates might be for possible assistant positions for Williams' coaching staff. While we're all chomping at the bits to know who the next coach will be, I applaud that fact that Snyder is taking his time and not making a hasty decision. All of us fans want a coach who can have the Redskins as constant winners, and who can win us a Super Bowl or three. If it takes awhile to find that guy, then I think Snyder should take as much time as he can. Of course giving the new regime a chance to get things rolling in the offseason.
SFREDSKIN 01-19-2008, 01:02 PM What's up with this Marty lovest? The only way I fathom him coming back would be, that he brings Cam Cameron and let's him run the offense without his conservative interference. If he brings Jimmy Raye then were screwed, kind of like having Joe Walton (remember him) run our offense.

I have no problem with grind it out football as long as it puts W's up on the scoreboard and not L's. I loved Shotty's smash mouthed football. He had a time at the beginning of that season, but after things caught on, it was very hard for teams to beat us when they didn't have the freakin' ball.
Campbell17 01-19-2008, 02:01 PM I been thinking and thinking about who this mystery man might be I think it has to be someone that is not a regular head coach candiate around the league.
Gibbs wasnt when we brought him in (coordinater for san diego?) and that turned out good.
rk3025 01-19-2008, 02:04 PM After a great 4 years with Gibbs, I can not believe that Dan would want to turn over the reins to Marty again
Most men that achieved what Snyder has accomplished do not look back and have visions for going forward [remember Lot's wife]

LOL, the only difference is, I didn't really view Marty's one season with us as a failed experiment. We started off 0-5 (much like Gibbs did his first year as coach,) and we finished 8-8. That was with a lesser talented group than what we have now.
70Chip 01-19-2008, 02:52 PM This need to make a marketing splash is indicative of a very childish inabilty on the part of Dan Snyder to defer gratification. He can't even swallow the idea of a ho-hum announcement in the runup to the Super Bowl in order to achieve someting truly marketable down the road. If he doesn't do the right thing here, one can only conclude that he is really only interested in making money. My position heretofore has been that while he certainly is in it for the money, he understands that winning is the best way to do that. I'm starting to think that he feels that winning is more like a bonus that he may at some point slide ass-backwards into, but is not his primary strategy going forward. The first goal is to protect the bottom-line and if he can win as well then that would be great. It's a losing strategy.
