Len Pastabelly on Gibbs' Retirement: "Just An Ordinary Joe"

The only thing that's been proven here is that you have an inflated view of your own significance which has led you start issuing commands to other people. How strange.

Yes Redskins_P, please dispute what hes saying. That's all I'm asking someone to do. I'm sick of seeing people here whine about how the media hates us and doesn't give us any credit, etc etc. Credit is earned, not given. Then when we play down the stretch and earn that credit people are mad that people start picking us.

I'm not going to dispute anything. Its clearly his own personal opinion. Is anyone else calling him an "ordinary joe" in the media? I think he deserves respect because he's earned it. He's earned it by being a winner and by coming back 14 years later to try and restore some of that. He may not have won us a Superbowl, and he may have made costly mistakes at times, but he was always the first one to take the blame when things went wrong. How can you not respect that? Its not like he fielded an absolutely terrible team every Sunday.


He had his players playing hard for him. And he did that after suffering one of the biggest tragedies in sports history.

I know you guys don't like it, but has Joe Gibbs been anything more than ordinary in his second stint? Defend your answer. Don't just call him a prick, but why should the public view a coach with a losing record in his second stint be deemed some sort of deity around the NFL. No one is taking away from what Gibbs did in the 80s and 90s, but prove to me using facts WHY Joe Gibbs should be seen as anything but an ordinary NFL coach in his second stint. You may not like the article, but that doesn't make it false, or means he 'hates' the Redskins. Every team thinks the media hates them.

We were a joke for 11 years before he came back. Save for that playoff appearance in '99, we had done nothing but look like a joke for over a decade. We've gone to the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years. Plus Gibbs pulled us out of the ashes this year. At 5-7 in the wake of the murder of our best player, he kept the entire organization together. Even Pasquerelli agrees that he did a great job in that regard.

Plus he leaves behind an extremely experienced staff which he assembled, and a very talented team of players he brought in. We are in much, much better shape than we were prior to his return in '04. So he may not have won another Super Bowl. But he righted the ship. We were a sinking franchise. We're not anymore. Do you disagree?

On paper his win-loss record looks ordinary. But his body of work with the organization over the last four years is far from ordinary.

Point is he didn't need to basically thumb his nose at us with his choice of words. That's all.

Matty -- did you read the entire article? I think a lot of the people here read the choice quote, and it really didn't seem that bad. LP gave both the good and bad of the Gibbs era. Yes, he brought up an article he posted earlier, but in fairness LP has stuck to his guns something we criticize for on a regular basis. The whole article seemed like a decent run down of his 2nd stint here.

Everything coming out of the players mouths lately speaks to the exact opposite.

i agree, i think the choice of words said it more. what was parcells record both playoffs and otherwise in dallas in his 12th stint?

It's the timing of the article that I have problem with. Do you agree with some of the pot shots he took at Gibbs in the article? Some of those comments weren't necessary.

I do have a legitimate gripe with Pastabelly. Mainly because when he was confronted in 2004 about the original article by a member of ES, Pastabelly got in a somewhat heated argument and said, "When I get questions from Redskins fans, i usually try to ignore them. I hate you f*ckers."

Nice post, GmScud -- as you say LP admitted he was the guy for the Taylor tragedy. The staff assembled is a great point, he has brought in many talented coaches that will help our team. I feel Gibbs did very well off the field. He brought in great coaches and some players through FA and the draft, Joe Gibbs as team president was a win for the Redskins, it was the actual coaching aspect I have had issues with.

I'm not quite sure about this. I believe that Joe Gibbs also assembled the oldest team in the NFL (not sure where I can check this fact, believe I heard it on ESPN a month or so ago -- but can't provide a link), our O line is in big trouble with age, and I'm worried about the work load Portis has seen. I don't think we're sinking, but I also don't think we're ready to float right to the top.

This is what I somewhat disagree with. While playoffs are playoffs, we made both runs by the skin of our teeth on a combination of luck and clicking at the right time. It was also the inconsistency that killed me.

I'll agree 100% that the President part of Gibbs was a success. On the field, I was disappointed. But it's not about that -- I just didn't find this article horribly insulting, I don't think much by the quote by SGG was read by most.
