mheisig 01-08-2008, 11:31 AM I am extremely upset about this. Don't say repeatedly you intend on fulfilling your contract and then walk away after the toughest and most gut wrenching season the Redskins organization has ever endured. It's not right. Unless Joe has a very good reason for not sticking around, I'm afraid my level of respect for him might be slightly diminished and I hate that feeling.
God, I am so pissed off right now and I just can't sit here and be all, "Well, good luck Joe, thanks for the memories." I realize I sound like a complete drama queen right now, but I don't care. I hope I feel differently after I hear him speak.
When did he say he was coming back for sure in 2008? All I recall him saying is that he'll have his usual sit-down with Snyder once the season is over.
If yesterday's presser was any indication, he was either on the fence or already decided but hadn't finalized with Snyder, and thus was very non-committal with the media.
As for good reasons, the guys is 67, probably hasn't seen his family in 4 years, and has a grandson with leukemia, besides bringing this team through what is arguably one of the most difficult seasons to be endured by an NFL team.
I think that's reason enough to cut him a break for wanting to leave.
BigSKINBauer 01-08-2008, 11:33 AM He made a decision to go. He is old. I respect his decision and am glad that he brought us back into contention. His job coming here was to make us a respectable team and 2 playoff apperences in the last 3 years makes us a respectable team. He did a fantastic job and now look at the players and coaches we got in here. We will probably promote Williams to coach and that is great. There is not such a drastic change. The wheels will still keep moving. Gibbs did that. He took that sorry piece of shit team we had and made us a real team. He put the pieces in place. We have a full chess board now and maybe someone else will do a great job controlling it. Gibbs did exactly what he was supposed to do. Bring the chance of winning back to washington. Gibbs is the man.

Gibbs had said over and over he would fulfill his contract. The whole 5 years. I was curious if someone would be upset over that. It's a fair gripe, in my opinion.

I'm talking about the fact that up until this point, whenever he was asked during prior seasons, if he would stay, he stated he intended on fulfilling his contract. He said it repeatedly. Don't say it, if you don't mean it. I have no problem letting him go if he's got a valid reason.

My thoughts exactly.
For selfish reasons of course I would want Gibbs back, but you have to respect the man's decision.

I believe he always used the phrase "it is my intention to fulfill the contract". I do not doubt he intended to. Circumstances sometimes get in the way of intentions. His personal life (family) is more important than Lombardi trophies.

I think he did mean it previously... then the Sean Taylor tragedy happened and he obviously had a change of heart when thinking of his family.

Yeah and since when can't people change their minds?
If his heart isn't in it, he would be doing everyone a huge diservice by coming back and just going through the motions.
Cut the guy some slack. I can't imagine from his point of view how difficult this season was.
FRPLG 01-08-2008, 11:42 AM I think we need perspective on this. Fans can get angry at a guy like Petrino just walking away adn quitting for greed or selfish reasons. hell we can get mad at Spurrier for tanking the team into the ground and then bolting. But Joe brought this team back to respectability through some trying times and he isn't leaving the cupboard bare. He has honest to goodness struggles in his personal life to deal with. I have no ill will about this. Just disappointment.

Yes you do.
If anything, you should respect Gibbs more after this season, from the way he held the team together and led them, to his love for his family over his career and personal success.
He fully intended to fulfill his contract coming in, but...life happens.
