Bill B 12-20-2007, 06:46 PM Part of the cap system includes a provision that if you load contracts with incentives that have to be earned and the player does not earn them than you get the unpaid amount back as a credit to your cap. A lot of the cunning teams use this to protect themselves against players who don't produce and to also aid them in managing their cap. Imagine if instead of the Redskins just giving Brandon Llyod a $10 million bonus largely related to signing/roster bonuses and instead weighed it more heavily on incentives that had to be earned? With his obvious lack of production the Skins could have just cut their losses with him, not had to pay him all the money they already have, and in addition get his unearned incentives back as credits on their cap - that would have been smart cap management - not just signing away a huge check on a wing and a prayer. If a player does not have enough confidence that he can reach some of those incentives than let anothter team take a chance on him.
So yes Synder can simply throw more money at the problem but why not use the incentive credit provision to your advantage and increase your cap?
Also I beleive Schneed pointed out that you do have to look out for your future somewhat and cannot redo everyone's contract because as you redo a contract you are pushing more dead money onto the cap of future years when you finally do release the player.
jsarno 12-20-2007, 07:55 PM A quick glance at the link and I thought it said "Trust Jsarno On This One."
That would be wise! :D
I have always been a person that said, "we'll figure it out, we always do", but I am not as certain this year...well, Of course it will still work out for us, but there is a lot less wiggle room this year as compared to years past. If we are anything, we are good at working that cap for every penny.

I am assuming you are referring to what will be known as "the great Giants collapse of 2007"?
Rock31 12-20-2007, 08:49 PM LOL and giggles.
That Guy 12-20-2007, 09:18 PM overpaying for crappy players is still stupid, regardless of the cap.
that said, we're alright cap-wise, but the mistakes made are huge ones (cash wise) and do keep us more limited than some other clubs will be this offseason.
betts, talyor, cooley, moss etc ARE great contracts though, so as long as lloyds and archuletas and arringtons are avoided (lavar could still play, but not at 7+mill a year), we'll be okay.

Me too.
djnemo65 12-20-2007, 09:48 PM Considering how successful Snyder is at building successful companies and MAKING money, you'd think he'd change his Washington Redskins business model. The return on his investment has been subpar at best in regard to the product on the field. It almost seems like he pays hand over fist for the big names, just so he can gouge more money from the fans...
Wait a minute...
Yeah but if making money is the standard you are applying the Redskins have been more succesful than any other team. They top the league in revenue every year, and their performance on the field seems to impact profits very little.
Will there be a day when fans stop shelling out money on the team? Possibly, but I doubt it. As long as Snyder can bring in a few big names and give the fans something to get excited about that stadium will be full.
All this being said, btw, I have no doubt that Snyder desperately wants to win.
Schneed10 12-20-2007, 11:05 PM Yeah we on this very site have identified a bunch of ways the cap can be trimmed. We've given lists of players that can provide cap savings to us. Nice to see a media member plugged in enough to give an accurate analysis. Kudos to JLC.
I get so sick of the national media, who are WRITERS, write about salary cap accounting. That makes about as much sense as Martha Stewart calling a football game with Al Michaels. Guys like Peter King have NO CLUE how cap money is counted and how it all works. That's why they're WRITERS.
backrow 12-21-2007, 12:09 AM Me too.
Me three. But I re-read the thread title three times before I clicked the link, only then did I understand.
giantone doesn't have a clue, same as his g-nomes, who by the way, lost to our B&G. The same B&G team that has had 12/22 starters out the year, or out a couple of games with injuries, or in ST's case, killed.
After seeing that 12/22 statistic, doesn't it makes you wonder how our team won seven games?
