The NFL isnt giving the Skins or any other team extra picks because a player is killed or seriously injured (off the field) and can no longer play.

Might not be entirely true. The NFL awards compensation picks to teams who lose players to free agency. I'm not sure how a death like this works, he might be considered a lost player and we may receive comp picks. Or maybe it's handled entirely differently. As for salary cap relief, we get none. SouperMeister 12-13-2007, 10:07 AM The best you can do is move Landry to FS and hope to draft of develop someone to take over at SS. That will never hold the possibilities that Taylor at FS and Landry at SS did. Taylor and Landry might have become the best safety tandem ever, but now we'll never know. firstdown 12-13-2007, 10:11 AM I'm thinking in terms of the NFL giving us picks of some kind in the draft, and how would this whole thing impact our salary cap? I think someone posted that ST will cost us around 2.4 million next year. Sa for a draft pick that would not be fair to other team even though this was a tragic loss other teams have had to deal with loosing players to death, injusries, etc... I do think the NFL should change the rules concerning the cap issues for team that loose players because of death or and maybe include career ending injuries. Redskin Warrior 12-13-2007, 10:19 AM We could never replace ST, but I will say if LL continues to play like he played last week he will be the closest to ST we could ever get. scowan 12-13-2007, 10:23 AM Great defenses are made up of a lot of moving parts. Yes you need a good CB, FS and SS, but you also can make up for weakness in those areas with a good pass rush, which the Skins have not really had in a long time. Go get another good DE or Monster DT and don't worry about replacing ST for right now. Landry is going to be great not just good, so find someone to complement him and get better upfront. Our LBs are pretty good, no need to do anything there except maybe long term for M Washington. irish 12-13-2007, 10:24 AM Might not be entirely true. I dont think we ever will. Free agency and off-field deaths are entirely different things. I remember in the 80 when the Steelers drafted a guy named Gabe Rivera. He was their 1st round draft pick, played 1 (maybe 2) seasons and was awesome. They called him Senor Sack because he was sacking QBs left & right. He was paralyzed in a car crash and lost to the Steelers forever. The NFL gave them nothing in terms of draft picks. Its just something the Skins will have to live with and make the best of. hail_2_da_skins 12-13-2007, 12:11 PM I think someone posted that ST will cost us around 2.4 million next year. The lost of Sean Taylor is going against the Redskin's salary cap. That's just not right. That's a double slap in the face. It will be next to impossible to replace Taylor's athleticism and ball hawking abilities but the Skins are not without talent at safety. LaRon Landry has developed nicely and can get better. He seems to have the talent to move over to free safety. I like Reed Doughty. He is not as talented as Landry or Taylor but he is a solid player. He is in position. Supports the run well. Is not getting toasted. I wouldn't panic and say safety is a priority. Defensive and offensive line depth are priorities. A physical play making receiver with size is a priority. scowan 12-13-2007, 12:15 PM I want to make another comment about replacing ST...... What would it be like if the Skins had an Albert Haynesworth type player (Titans) in the middle of the D-Line? (Not in additude mind you, but as a player) We need to get better upfront. Give me some Run-Stopping-control-the-line-of-scrimage player over a knockout Safety and watch how fast our D gets better. hail_2_da_skins 12-13-2007, 12:26 PM I want to make another comment about replacing ST...... Give me some Run-Stopping-control-the-line-of-scrimage player over a knockout Safety and watch how fast our D gets better. Excellent point. The best way to improve your team is to improve both the offensive and defensive line. Skilled players all of sudden start looking a lot better when the quarterback has time to throw, running backs have big holes to run through, wide receivers have time to get open, linebackers don't have to shed blocks to get to the ball carrier and the secondary can anticipate hot reads because the quarterback doesn't have time to go through all his options. Damn I should be a GM. |
