We are not playing like a good team and I think we're a long, long shot to make the playoffs. But, I don't know why people can't grasp the very simple concept that our chances of making the playoffs are relative to the performance of OTHER teams. Whether we are a "playoff caliber team," doesn't depend solely on how we are playing, it depends on how we are playing RELATIVE to other teams. Four teams that are definitely in contention for the 6th seed are the Lions (who we smoked), the Cardinals (who we beat), the Eagles (who we beat once and lost to once), and the Vikes (who we have yet to play). None of those teams are dominant and none of them look like "playoff caliber teams."

We've got an average offense (17th overall) and a pretty good defense (10th overall). We've been playing well through 3 quarters of 6 of our 7 losses. Have we been good enough to close games out? Nope. Have we been making mistakes at critical points in various games? Yup. But, that doesn't mean that we can't make the playoffs.

Sometimes I wonder whether the people who think that others need a dose of reality are themselves asleep at the switch.

Very well said in a matter-of-factly kind of way. I feel the exact same way. I could see us running off some wins and going, I could see us continuing in our ways and missing. We've lost 4 in a row. That doesn't give most people much optimism. I think we definitely can go. I'm also definitely not sure if we will go.

How's that for on the fence???

Too many close ones that hurt us this year. I think its possible but everyone has to be playing on theyre highest level. I hope the players arent as negative as lot of you cause then were def screwed.

Hah. I'm definitely not optimistic about our chances of making the playoffs, even considering the fact that our competition isn't exactly great. I think this team cannot close games and is too banged-up and emotionally drained to win more than 2 of our remaining games.

But, as you noted, the point of my post was to point out that we can make the playoffs. Those that think otherwise need to take a step back, review the NFL playoff system, and look at our competition. Quite simply, the NFC sucks and so some "sucky" teams are going to be playing in the postseason.

I'm with Tomo, who should we draft.

i dont have another fall back team to cheer for so forgive me for having blind faith in hoping we do 5 straight. all the other teams are beatable in my eyes. but in the case we dont pull out of this vortex im interested in kenny phillips the safety from miami or malcolm kelly from oklahoma. we need a go to reciever who can go for the jump balls in the red zone..

Yeah, I think the way it's going there will definitely be an 8-8 team going...

The playoffs seem comical to me this season, not just from the Skins point of view but for the league in general. From a fans standpoint, NE has the league by its tail. Only an injury to Brady could keep NE from another SB title IMO. The NFC will send GB or Dallas to the SB to be handily defeated by NE or, on the outside chance, by Indy. Essentially, the AFC has two teams superior to anything in the NFC. I completely sick of watching the Pats dominate everybody and the AFC dominating the NFC. Sure, Belichick and the NE franchise deserves respect for putting together a dreamteam under the same set of opportunities and constraints all teams face. But I'm still sick of it.

Finally, for the Skins a playoff berth means we must have won a few more games, which just mean lower draft picks for what in all likelihood would be a first-round playoff loss in an away game. Not really worth it IMO but hey, that's just me. Nobody really expected this to be a rebuild year but that's just how things worked out. We need some tremendous talent in the draft to shore up a creaky o-line, an enervated WR corp, probably a DB (w/ Springs on his way out), and now (RIP ST) a safety. Sometimes I get pegged for being a pessimist for looking at the season this way but I can't help thinking further into the future and what it will take to make this team competitive again. The playoff berth in '07 doesn't do much good toward that goal.

With the way the Eagles and Ravens played the Patriots down to the wire, I'm not so sure now that they are a lock for a Super Bowl win. I think they could definitely lose to the likes of Indy or the Steelers in the playoffs, and I think on a bad day they could even lose to the Cowboys in the SB assuming they both make it.

Let's not crown them just yet.

I had to look back 5 weeks ago and see where we were. We didn't have to win all 5. Maybe not even 4 but we did it. We made it. I thought 4 would be enought to get in and but like i wrote, i didn't think 3 would be. Minni is going to overtime and if they needed it i think they would win but now they know they are out. DOesn't that feel EXACTLY like 2005??? We are going to the playoffs....

NOW WE NEED TO WIN 4 MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@#@1!!!

I'm a "doubter" or at least I was...but man that was incredible. I didnt really care how things unfolded post Sean Taylor, but my god this has sucked me in. I'm so freaking proud of this team and to be a Redskins fan. I nearly cried after the game that was incredible.
