rypper11 11-14-2007, 10:02 AM Aren't you forgetting a certain defending champ?
I know that I am in the minority with this, but I think Eli's brother is the most overrated player in the history of the NFL. Put any number of NFL QB's on that team with Tom Moore coaching and they have 2 or 3 SB trophies. Look at his numbers with and without Marvin Harrison. Big Ben has Heath Miller (not as good as Dallas Clark) and Hines Ward (no where near Harrison). Palmer is surrounded by guys who aren't as interested in football as they are in their Probation Officers (Bengals most immature team in NFL?). Favre has Jennings (not has good as Stokely or Gonzalez let alone Harrison and Wayne) and Driver and a running game that doesn't concern anyone.
Despite the fact that he should never have said it when still a teammate, Vandajerk was right in criticizing his QB a few years ago. I've never seen him put lesser talent on his overrated shoulders and carry them but I have seen his choking bring down a team with far greater talent than their talent.
And I'm not even going into his off field sexual misconduct problems (though with his penchant for groping asses you couldn't pay me enough to be Jeff Saturday. Kidding I know that it is just women he harrasses.)
Put him on the Giants and I think everyone would see who the better Manning is. Had the Colts gone Leaf instead the Chargers wouldn't have won any more SB's, we just wouldn't be overwhelmed with Peyton Manning commercials. But hey, then we wouldn't have had that funny SNL so....
rypper11 11-14-2007, 10:05 AM Roethlisberger and Romo are close.
It causes me physical pain to admit, but Romo might end up being one of the all time great ones. The touchdown flip while getting drilled against the Giants was sick! And he makes plays like that every game. Hate him, but he is a playmaker.

Also, how can you ignore the weapons Brady has now?

I think you gotta look at their body of work. Brady has had some serious scrubs and still put up great numbers and won (Caldwell, Patten, etc). McNabb has only ever had one dominating WR and is consistently a top tier QB (sorry Thrash is underrated and one of my favorite players but he's not a top level threat). I think any good qb needs players around him and few guys can succeed with no help. But I can't think of any other qb in history that has been given so much credit for his teammates exceptional talent (a close one might be Gannon in Oakland a few years ago, but even then.)
I'm not saying that he's not been a top fifteen qb every year, just that he's not the best, 2nd best or even top 5 right now.
And this doesn't even take into account that OLine. Put him on the Falcons or Dolphins. Would his QB rating be over 75?

So I guess that fact the Colts made it to the playoffs with a bottom tier defense last season had nothing to do with Peyton Manning... or the fact that the Colts have only lost nine games in the last three seasons, with an average or worse defense?
If the only required pieces for a Superbowl victory are great receivers, why haven't the Cardinals, Lions, or Cowboys won a Superbowl recently? Yeah, Peyton sucks... :laughing2

What you left off of your equation with Peyton is that they have to get through the Pats to win a SB and if the Pats were not in their way I think he would have one more SB.

Just to clarify, you're talking about the Bengals team and Chris Henry, correct? Because his top two targets never get into any legal trouble.
As for Peyton...I agree he has very good weapons, but I still think he's the passer in the league. I would probably take Tom Brady over him right now, simply based on his leadership and I don't think there's a huge gap in ability, but Peyton is still the best passer and one of the smartest players to ever play the game. While I may be sick of him because he's overexposed, (could he do any more commercials?!) he's still the best there is.
BleedBurgundy 11-14-2007, 11:33 AM I don't see how you can say Peyton Manning, a sure-fire first ballot hall of fame qb is overrated based on the fact that his numbers are better with Marvin Harrison than without. I think you might want to consider what Harrison's numbers look like if he had never played with PM.
JoeRedskin 11-14-2007, 11:39 AM In a recent SI player's poll, pretty much everybody picked Peyton as the best player out there. If the guys playing the game think he's the best, I'm not gonna argue with them.
BDBohnzie 11-14-2007, 11:44 AM IMO, this is how I would break it down.
Brady and Peyton are in a tier above everyone else. These guys constantly produce big numbers and have their teams in the hunt every year. Even if you have the tools to win big doesn't mean you always win big, it's how you produce with those tools.
The next tier is guys like Big Ben, Carson, Romo, Favre, Bulger, Hasselbeck, McNabb. Guys who are quality QBs, but are either missing that certain something, or haven't hit their peak yet. Favre is here because of his remarkable season this year, almost like destiny wants him to succeed again, and he's riding the wave.
Then you have the guys like Eli, Rivers, Kitna, Brees, Garcia, Garrard, Campbell, Anderson, Young, Culpepper, Schaub. Guys who show potential, or have had 1 good season but haven't followed it up with much, or are playing in a system that doesn't overexpose their weaknesses.
Then you have guys like Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich, Damon Huard, Kyle Boller, Brian Griese, Alex Smith. Guys who are serviceable at best, and won't ever amount to much.
Guys like McNair, Warner, Trent Green and Pennington kinda fit somewhere between 2 and 3. Quality QBs that are in the twilight of their careers or at least look like they are on their downward slope or the injury bug has certainly limited their potential. Favre would have been here last year, but certainly not this year.
Obviously, from year to year, a QB can change tiers...some get better (Favre), some get worse (McNair, Leftwich), and some are on their way up (Garrard, Anderson).
