When to/not to BLITZ!

First off, let me agree with the overwhelming majority that believe the defense won the Cards game. That being said, was anyone else wondering why we only blitzed banged up Kurt Warner like 3 times? I mean, ANY NFL QB can pick apart a defense when given enough time to throw, and in the second half of that game Warner had all day to throw the ball. Was anyone else screaming for a blitz in the second half? It seems like GW has changed his philosophy so as to only send the front 4 and let the coverage create the turnover, whereas in years past he blitzed on 3/4 of the plays.

I would have liked to have seen more pressure at times yesterday but at the same time GW's new philosophy has worked very well so far, so it's tough for me to argue with the overall results. The D is the least of our concerns right now.

I was MORE screaming... "STOP RUNNING THE BALL!" If you're talking about playcalling.

Seriously, our problem was the fact our defense was on the field the whole f-ing second half.

Right. If our offense just SUSTAINED some freaking drives, the defense wouldn't have given up crap. Refs weren't great for us defensively either.

I'm 50/50 on this one.. We certainly can't knock the defense for their effort and results this year.. The offense has left them on the field too long and that's hurt before and almost again yesterday.. I was very surprised Grilliams didn't bring more pressure, especially with a gimpy Warner and an average (at best) OL..

Its almost a completely different GW philosophy this year, but again its hard to criticize when the defense completely bailed us out of the game.

Given the outstanding performance of the Skins D in 3 of the 4 seasons that Gregg Williams has been coordinator, let's give him the benefit of a doubt here. He has been the most competent coach of the Gibbs 2.0 era.

Warner had all day to throw yesterday, especially in the 2nd half when the Skins played with more of a cushion. With no lead safe, I believe the Skins should have sent an extra guy in here and there to put a bit more pressure on the QB.

The Skins' offense needs to start pushing forward and eating the clock more. 5 of 11 drives were 3 and out. With 3 of those coming in the 4th quarter. I cannot believe that with the kickoff return Cartwright had in the 2nd half, that the offense could not put the nail in the coffin. 28-6 and the tone would have been set. Coming away with nothing there shifted the momentum the other way.

GW has run the same defense 3 weeks in a row now. If you give Brady that kind of time next week, he is going to completely destroy this defense.

I dont think it's a question on when to and when not to blitz, it's a question of this offense moving the ball and keeping the Big MO on their side. The Skins escaped by the skin of their teeth yesterday. at New England, at NY Jets, vs. Philly, at Dallas, at Tampa. 5 big games that will determine if the Skins are in the playoff hunt, or if they are going to be watching games at home come January.

Well I did feel the same way and I agree w/ you.Especially with Warner playing injured. We needed to be in his face ALOT more the 2nd half. However...that being said. How often do you think we should blitz Tom Brady?? Cause seriously...if we blitz too often, they'll adjust and burn us for some huge yardage!
Hell we might need to play 10\11 guys back and only rush a few. Maybe we will have to rely on our coverage to strongly defend and "hope" for a turnover. Those are few and far between from a team as good as NE. :(

There are some times you need pressure. We hardly blitzed at all, and for the most part it has worked. I'd like to see us mix it up just a bit. What we're seeing is more turnovers via INTs because of coverage. Blitzing doesn't allow for the corners to play the ball very well. Safety help over the top allows the corners to jump underneath routes and fthen we see what Taylor can do.

Gwill minus one down year has done nothing but field a top 5-10 D every year. All in all I feel he's the guy we really lean on to win games for us.
