SmootSmack 10-22-2007, 01:45 AM Here's some thoughts on the offense. I actually feel it's a combination of things here, injuries, playcalling AND execution.
1. Injuries: we cannot run the ball. Both Gibbs and Saunders predicate much of their offensive philosophy on balance and running for a high average. Taking that aspect of the game away is a big blow. The big loss here is Thomas, IMO, but Rabach is a close second. And that's not to mention Jansen who, IMO, would have come on after a slow start and was always about the run game.
2. Reaction to the injuries leads to a modified game plan, no doubt. They still tried to establish the run, but failed. And they had lots of short drops, because Pucillo cannot make the line calls like Rabach (and can't block as well either). The D has been lights out, so a conservative game plan is not crazy. Plus, they aren't ready just to send JC back there like McNabb, if they ever will. First, he could get hurt with this line (did you see Wade on that sack? Wtf? Wake up!). Second, he could make the wrong read (as has been mentioned, he hasn't started a full season's worth of games yet!). So it's not nuts, again. My complaint is that I think JC is ready to step up, and I'd like to see that more. But I get the thinking here.
3. Execution: we were in 3rd and short a lot, and couldn't convert. It doesn't take a dang long bomb there. The lack of a run really hurts here. But my guess is that on most of those third and short "behind the line" throws were not the first reads. I could be wrong, but it seemed JC came off a longer route and threw underneath. That avoids the sack, and you HOPE someone can make a guy miss. We couldn't do that. So better reads, more time to throw, and a juke or two would help! And my guess is also that blocks are being missed--again, you can point to injury, but still. And finally, on the screen INT. JC is 6' 5" and failed to get it over the rusher. That screen was a nice call. We didn't execute.
The big stat for this O is 3rd down percentage. We do well when we convert--that opens the playbook, tires the D, and creates opportunities to take shots. We are having trouble with that, no doubt. All three factors are to blame.
Nice post. As for the question in the thread title, the simple answer is many fans don't know what to do if they're not complaining. How much you want to bet that if we win next week there will be threads such as "We Nearly Blew It" "How Could We Beat the Pats But Lose to The Packers" "Cut Frost Now" and so on. It's the nature of the beast.
DynamiteRave 10-22-2007, 03:30 AM I pointed this out in the game thread, but it seems as if the fans are getting tired of being turned on and then turned off.
Turned on by games like Detroit and Philly. And then turned off by games like GB and today where they almost gave up a big lead.
I had never heard so many, loud noticeable boo's at FedEx like that so far this season. And not just booing for penalties and bad calls but booing at 3 and outs. I mean I can get pretty negative from time to time but even that made me feel a little disheartened.
I mean if I'm out there on the field playing or if I'm on the coaching staff, it's gotta hit you deep that your own fans are booing at you cause they start to lose faith in you. It must be pretty hard trying to ignore the voice of 85,000+.
Luxorreb 10-22-2007, 03:56 AM I'm not complaining.
We won.
And that is ok.
I do question our finishing moves.
Enjoy the W!!!
We'll be lucky to get one next week...

I agree and I also think that there are a lot more fans on the path nowadays who exchew understanding the game and being realistic for being emotional and reactionary. I have serious wonders about the people who keep trying to say that our OLine being decimated shouldn't matter that much. It means everything and anyone who can't see that is either dumb or simply close minded. Either way they are basing their opinions on a lack of understanding.
I am not saying all this as an excuse. I am stating reality. Our Oline sucks right now. Not much we can do about it. Based on what we have available I think our offensive production is right in line with expectations and should get better as health increases.
#56fanatic 10-22-2007, 08:57 AM what is NOT to complain about? Again we are a field goal at the end to determine a win or a loss. luckily Rackers missed the damn thing. What we are doing in 2nd halfs is absolutely ridiculous. This staff better put something else together as the season goes on or we are going to be on the short stick of these games. The Giants and Packers games are going to come back and haunt us. We have too many tough games coming up and we are just not playing very good. The O line is horrible. I understand we have starters injured, but Wade was a 7 year starter, Fabini was also a starter. these guys are not scrubs that are career backups. They should be better than this. The NFL doesn't care or give effort points for teams dealing with injuries. The playcalling in the 2nd half again was horrible. We can not keep going run 1st and 2nd down and leaving ourselves 3rd and longs. I just dont understand how Moss has two catches, how we are throwing down the field to thrash?? Moss is our playmaker and he only gets two balls?? I dont even think they threw his way very much, no more than 5 times. Jason is playing well, this staff needs to allow him to move around, roll out make things happen. Open up the offense a little because the run game is awful. Usually you use the run to open up the pass, I believe we are going to have to pass to open up the run now. These games should not come down to a last 2nd field goal. We sit back there and let Warner pick us apart, when the entire NFL knows if he gets pressured he gets rattled. We blitzed 3 times yesterday, 3 freaking times, and I dont know if that can even be consitered a blitz. We sent 5! what happened to the aggressive style. IF warner can sit back there and pick us apart, what do you think Brady is going to do?
FRPLG 10-22-2007, 09:06 AM JWSleep and I laid out exactly what the offensive philosophy was yesterday. If you're are wondering why Moss only had 2 catches it is because we couldn't pass protect. Anyone remember when we tried to throw downfield under Spurrier and we had pass protection? Yeah we lost those games and our QBs were sore for the rest of the week.

Post of the day right here, well said.
:goodjob:
redsk1 10-22-2007, 09:32 AM Yes, our o-line is decimated. Yes, you're putting some new faces out there. I just question our decision making/gameplanning/adjustments/playcalling or whatever you want to call it. We tried to give the game away, by some ultra conservative play. How about a rollout? How about a shotgun (i don't remember seeing it although i can't be sure)? I just got the feeling we were in shutdown mode again. Our offense can't leave the D on the field as long as they did and expect to keep a good offense down.
No question our oline couldn't run block & couldn't protect that well. IMO there comes a time when you just gotta go for it a little bit and try to win the game. We didn't and escaped.
I am happy we got a W b/c we've lost a couple of games that we should have won. 4-2...not bad at all, but we're not going anywhere w/out any offense.
BigSKINBauer 10-22-2007, 09:33 AM i like skin fans better when we are losing and delusional.

I agree entirely w/the pass to set up the run. That's what we did v. Detroit & JC had a high comp. % & we ran in the 2nd half.
We're also gonna have to blitz Brady. Warner had too much time on some crucial plays, e.g. the 2 td passes.
