Just read this on yahoo sports from Chris Carter...formerly of Vikings:

"I'm a huge Washington Redskins fan and I cannot understand why Art Monk has not been selected for the Hall of Fame. Art was the all-time leading receiver (940 receptions) at one time in his career and won a couple of Super Bowls. Michael Irvin was inducted last year. Why do you think they keep passing Art by?"

Randolph, N.J.

The No. 1 argument I hear against Monk is the lack of Pro Bowl appearances. He only made it three times. When you look at the amount of time he played – 16 years – and in his conference, he was only among the top four receivers three times, then how could he be a Hall of Famer? And keep in mind here: we're just talking about within his conference, not the whole league. And people say, if they were only going to take one receiver away from the Redskins offense, they would try to slow down Gary Clark. When you take all of that into consideration, there's a very strong case to keep him out of Canton.

How many probowls did Riggins make?...something like 1 or 2 right. The whole thing is crap. Considering the trash that make it into the probowl year in and year out...I'm not even sure its a valid measuring device. There is plenty to support Monk. Besides that, look at the other receivers of his era that are in....Lynn Swann? Give me a break! Maybe if Monk cried every time someone mentioned the hall of fame instead of just living his life, he'd be in by now.

correct me if I'm wrong - Riggo never made the pro bowl.
Clark was the more dangerous deep reciever, but dropped a lot more.

It almost sounds like he's looking for reasons not to vote him in, rather than looking at all the many reasons to vote him in.

I remember watching the last 4-5 years of Monk's career & so often he was referred to as "future hall of famer Art Monk." Can't believe it when I think about it now.

Isn't Carter up for election now along with Monk? If so do you think he is trying to build a case against Monk to make himself look better?

Riggo made 1...I looked it up. Good point about Clark. He did drop a lot of balls. Anyone who wonders about Carter being a jack ass needs only to look back at his comments two years ago during our playoff run. He is an idiot and in love with himself.

Maybe people around the league should have voted him to more probowls.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

I was amazed to learn how few Riggo made... but it is a requirement to be considered eligible for the hall of fame to have made a pro bowl....

You realize that mean Gus Frerotte is eligible.

Anyone know what Carter's numbers look like compared to Monks? I know one fact...NO Superbowl appearances in his career!

Wanga - you are correct - Carter and Tim Brown are both coming up so the WR vote is getting crowded again. Here is a post from Rick Gosselin of the Dallas News who is a HOF voter....

"Rick Gosselin: The wide receiver queue is getting jammed up now with Monk and Andre Reed already there and both Cris Carter and Tim Brown soon to enter. We’ve had lively discussions about Monk and he’s been close. I think we as committee are having a difficult time defining what a Hall of Fame receiver is. Is it statistics? Is it championships? Is it impact? Monk played on three Super Bowl championship teams and wasn’t a Pro Bowl receiver in any of those three seasons. Yet the Redskins had a Pro Bowl wide receiver in each of those three seasons – Charlie Brown in 1982 and Gary Clark in both 1987 and 1991. I can’t imagine the Cowboys winning a Super Bowl in the 1990s without Michael Irvin as their go-to guy and Pro Bowl wide receiver."

So basically the HOF voters don't even know the parameters on which to vote on and this has become a glorified popularity contest that gets media friendly players in the door first. since Monk did not do a lot of interviews and wasn't a media guy he gets unfairly punished.

Here is a link to anyone ever interested in Art Monk and the HOF and updates to any events relating to this. Hopefully the HOF voting committee will get its head out of the sand and vote him in....
