Tony McGee On The Giants Game

Hi Everyone,

Good to be back this week, unforunatley for the first time in 2007 coming in after a loss. As you all well know, it's very dissapointing that anytime you put up 17 points in a half, own a 14 point lead, and can't protect the lead. I don't think the Redskins rushed enough in the second half coming out of the locker room, and they didn't play Joe Gibbs style of football. As far as the playcalling goes, I think they need to go back to Joe Gibbs style of football. The decisions on this team right now are way to expedicious right now, and there just seems like there is way too much confusion on who is actually calling the plays. I, personally like Gibbs old school mentality and I think thats how they got to the playoffs in 2005 and thats how they played better down the stretch last season. They a a rushing football team and they set up the pass with the rush, bottom line.

As to why Portis was not in? I do not know if they could not get him in on time, or if they wanted the "tougher" rusher in, because Betts is more verticle than Portis. Rest assured though Portis is one tough guy to bring down, and he can take a beating while still being a guy that could break any rush at anytime. As for Mike Sellers, he's just far to important as a blocker to get the ball in that situation, is how I think the coaches saw it. When you're running behind 45, most times you're going to get into the endzone, so I think thats a big reason why he was not the guy called upon....I still think the best guy to carry the ball in that situation is a guy who plays for the Lions right now by the name of TJ Duckett. I still can't get over why they traded for this guy giving up a 3rd round pick, didn't play him...and then when he got a chance he played really well and they didnt make any attempt to get him back. Sellers/Duckett would have been a perfect combo in that situation...but that is all in hindsight.

Now I think the offense is attacking the outs/fly patters more right now because that is what Jason Campbell is the best at and I think the coaches are somewhat limiting him right now so that he doesnt ruin the confidence that he has built up until this point. He has only played 9 games so far, you must remember so I think they are still looking to stick to what he does best. In addition, I dont think they currently have a good reciever to go across the middle and I have no clue what is going on with Brandon Lloyd. As far as the offensive line goes I think they are doing ok at this point. They will mesh a little better as they play together a little further into the season but at the same time, they are what they are...and it is a downgrade from what they were in 2006.

As to why the Redskins don't seem to ever put it together for four quarters...It goes back to the days when I was playing, and Joe Gibbs #1 strength was his halftime adjustments and the entire style and mindset in the locker room at that time was to keep doing what we did well and just fix the little mistakes and things would come around. It seems today that the team never sticks to the successes that they have at the begining of the games and then stumble big time in the third quarter. When it comes to the fourth quarter, they are always forced to scramble and come up with something and can't get it together. It seems to be a trend of the Redskins since Gibbs left the first time around...I'm like most of you, I just don't understand why they dont stick to their successes...

I honestly can't think of too many games in Gibbs 2.0 where superior half-time adjustments heavily turned the tide in our favor. It seems that more games have come down to the last quarter, if not the last drive, than during the glory years. I'm longing for a couple good smackdowns, like the Dallas win at FedEx in 2005.

Yeah, it seems like if we do when a game it's only by a 3-8 point margin.

I was one of the people that thought Sellers should have gotten a shot to run it up the gut last week, but after Gibbs explained his reasoning, it made a lot of sense. If the best running play requires the best blocking back, that by all means, let him lead block. It still bugs me though, that Gibbs doesn't think that the best running play requires the best running back on the team to be successful.

I agree. It's almost seems to me like they dont make any adjustments at all (I know thats not really the case) or what they do adjust ends up being incorrect.

too many close games, we just cant really hammer the points on people. i feel like we play againsed the clock every game even if we are up.
