I agree with 70, starting guards don't grow on trees. And at the age of 30, there's only so much "coaching up" Buges can do with this guy. He may be a keeper and he may be good for depth. At any rate, I wouldn't expect him to start anytime soon. But to suggest he's better than the guys we have based on a scouting report doesn't mean much to me.

Oh yeah, we didn't forget about Mike Pucillo did we? He's still very much in the mix.

Makes you wonder why we went after Fabini in the first place, and not Demulling or Vincent.

I think Demulling can be a pretty good Guard in this league. It's hard to get a read on him since he hasn't done anything since 2004 though.

I think Fabini was mainly looked at as depth at the tackle spot.

This joker was cut from a HORRIBLE lions O-Line, where he was a BACK-UP. That's bad, folks.

He was picked up by Indy in the offseason because he used to be there and knew the offense. Then Indy lost some key linemen to injuries AND THEY STILL CUT HIM.

Then he was picked up by the Patriots, who we all know are horrible talent scouts (sarcasm) and they DROPPED HIM like Carlos Rogers trying to make an interception.

THERE'S GOT TO BE A BETTER OPTION... I'm not sure this is an upgrade over False Start Fabini.

What about Heyer? I know he's primarily a tackle - but he's shown promise - can he be converted to a guard? What about Pucillo? Or Lefotu? Or THE ADE?

Also remember this: so was Wade.

Don't forget it was Pucillo that took out two Eagle defenders with a GREAT block on the Portis TD run. I am not sure he is the answer for an every down guard, but he has been playing alot of TE on the line in short yardage situations.

Rabach is healthy too.

Look, this guy obviously isn't great--that's why he's available. But he's a fill-in, and hopefully, he'll fit in with the guys we have. Whether or not he starts really depends on Fabini's play--it's his to loose, I would guess. We'll see.

I view this as a depth signing, no more, no less. I don't think it's likely he'll be starting anytime soon (if at all) unless Fabini demonstrates he cannot maintain the position. I can't imagine there's a starting caliber guard on the street anywhere at this point, there's a reason he's available, and it's not a good one.

Heres why I think they choose DeMulling over Vincent:

- Randy Thomas is used on a lot of pulls and traps in our offensive system.

Kendryick Vincent Scouting Report
"He is a short area player who isn't very effective pulling or getting out on the edges. He is an ordinary athlete who bends too much at the waist and is slow to recover when beaten. Vincent isn't particularly agile and can get caught leaning."

Rick DeMulling Scouting Report
"He brings athleticism to the offensive line and seems to be a good fit at guard for the Lions' offense, which includes both pulling and trapping in the schemes. He is a solid technician and a knee-bender who plays with good body position and leverage. DeMulling excels when given the opportunity to block in space. He tracks defenders well and is able to get in position to make the block on the outside or on the second level."

Seems that DeMulling was better suited for Randy's spot. I bet if they were looking for a free agent Left Guard they would have signed Vincent, since he's more of a mauler as opposed to DeMulling who seems to be more of a finesse player.

Coach's Corner: Joe Bugel (http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=29433)

Joe Bugel: "We have a total of seven linemen on the roster, with two more on the practice squad. So we brought in Rick DeMulling in here to give us some quality depth."

"Todd and Jason bring a lot of experience, so we'll be all right there. Jason has played on the right side before. He started at right tackle for eight years with the Jets, so it's not too big for him. He is still learning the nuances of the guard position, but he'll be okay."

Sounds like Fabini is gonna be starter...and Demulling is just depth

But I guess it still all depends on performance

Nice post.....DeMulling sounds more and more like what we may need now and later if he needs to started. Still I would have like both and this is why. We have O lineman droping like flyes and I am sure Vincent will not be around later. Also the odds are better one of the two will work out. But I know there is only so many roster spots and money.
