Portis Says This Year Could Be Last With Skins.

I would take Portis over Julius Jones too, by the way. That is why I will lay money that Jones is gone after this season. The team is not impressed with him and this is a contract year for him. I think his days are numbered. Good riddance.

Dallas obtained Clevelands first round pick in next years draft, which is a probable top ten, maybe a top five pick. Trust me, with that possibility Dallas will have Darren McFaddin on the radar next April. Jones will be history.

It is not a question of whether Portis can "run around Greg Ellis and the rest of the Cowboys defense", but rather can he do it for the other 14 games on the schedule?

And I did NOT make a refence to Portis being "broken down" oddly enough, only you mentioned that.

My question was IF Portis was gone after only 4 seasons with the Redskins, was the trade of Bailey plus the second round draft pick plus the possible cap ramifications worth only 4 years of service? I mean the guy was only 22 when he was traded, certainly the team would expect more than 4 years for such a hefty trade and contract length. Especially since it seems that the Broncos will get many more years of service from Bailey (who was a 5 year verteran at the age of 26 when traded) and the draft pick surrendered than the 4 years Portis will have served in DC.

Certainly it would be disappointing if Clinton were to leave after another unsuccessful season. We'll see what happens.

As to Jones, if the team is not impressed with him, why has he been the starter for lo these many years now? Was he a Parcells guy? Will Marion Barbour take his place as everydown back now that Jason Garret is in charge of the offense? As a Redskins fan, I always feel relieved to see Jones out there instead of Barbour. Marion gives us fits.

What team doesnt do that? The minute a player is offered more $ by another team they will bolt so I have no problem with teams dumping guys they believe are not helping anymore. Its a business for players and organizations and the goal is winning. IMO, the minute CP cant help the team anymore he should be gone.

I understand that the majority of the NFL handles business that way, but the Redskins front office has a way of making a split with a star player as ugly as possible.

And I agree that if a player is completely used up and no longer productive, there's no point in keeping him around, but my point is the Redskins definition of "used up" is different from most people.

Didn't Denver use our 2nd rounder to draft Tatum Bell? Needless to say, he's no longer with the Broncos, and he's not a starter either.

Kevin Jones may be put on the PUP list, meaning Bell will be the starter.
Also, the Lions have said how great Tatem Bell has been during the preseason making everyone else seem like they are in slow motion.

Tatem Bell was leading the AFC in rushing when he was benched in Denver...why? Cause of fumbling issues...not completely unlike Betts.

I am now firmly buying into the fact that running backs are pretty easy to come by, and we don't need a huge cap number nor a huge mouth with Portis, especially when you factor in that he's gone from injury prone to fragile.

I would not say so much that there really is a "starter" it is a more situational 2-back system. Jones had more carries last season, but he primarily carries between the 20's. When they get to the red zone (or 3rd down) Barber is the guy. That is why Barber had 13 TD's last season to Jones's 4. I really do not call either a "starter", it is just a two-back attack is all.

I think this comment is closer to what he actually feels than most of the things he says, and I'd have to say that I agree. That's the way the front office does business in Washington. As soon as a player shows the slightest hint of having lost a step, he's expendable. Face of the team or not.

That's the way the entire NFL works, not just the Redskins. This is a business - if someone is establishing a track record of injuries and poor performance, they are going to be cut and someone else will be brought in.

I would agree with CP - if he doesn't get back to his former self this season, he probably will get traded. Everyone is expendable, no doubt about it.

How long is a team obligated to hang on to someone who can't cut it anymore? I'm certainly not saying CP is washed up, I fully expect him to have a huge year. But why do so many fans have some expectation that we'll hang on to people and pay them millions of dollars as long as they want to work here? Players are here to perform at a multi-million dollar salary level and win games. If it's not being done, get them out and bring in people who can.

I swear people thing that football teams are a big family business where people should be able to work happily in peace until they die or retire. It ain't that nice of a world, folks.

I don't. What has Champ won with Denver? Don't get me wrong, Champ is arguably the best CB in the game, but I like the way our secondary looks this year. I doubt we could afford Taylor, Landry and Champ back there.

Remember his contract was the highest ever for a running back until LT signed a bigger deal. His contract was in excess of 56 mil for 7 years plus a wicked signing bonus.

In the words of George Michael, while at a Wizards game, "You never pay that much money for a running back, when you can find them anywhere. The redskins messed around and are now MARRIED to the contract of Portis."

You only pay that to a quarterback who is your franchise, or to someone who defines your franchise. If he doesnt return to his prior form, then I dont think any skins fans will be upset to see him go.

Compelling argument...except, unless I'm mistaken, Champ signed a 7 year, $63 million contract (with an $18 million signing bonus) and CP signed an 8 year, $50 million contract (with a $17 million signing bonus) so I don't see where-from a financial perspective-Champ would have been better for us than CP.

So if what you say here is true, and good CB's are harder to come by, then Denver made out pretty well with trading Portis to Washington.

They drafted Bell with that pick they got from Washington, and now they traded Bell to Detriot for Dre Bly. Another RB for a CB. So esstentially Denver got a second round pick that ultimitely netted them another pro-bowl CB. They got a pretty good backfield out of the deal.

And, I must say, a backfield that will be there for more than 4 years.

Portis isn't going anywhere folks. We're getting our money's worth and we will continue to get our money's worth. I expect 1300+ yards from him this year.

It would be nice to see both him and Betts crack 1000, VERY NICE
