If Adam Schefter is reporting it I'd say it's true.

On a somewhat related note though, Jeremiah Trotter has been released.

Should we give Totter another shot? Veteran minimum?

Ha ha - I kill me....

Assuming this isn't a bogus lead - anyone know anything interesting about Randall Godfrey? For instance:

1) Why he wasn't on a roster
2) Is he broken
3) Why no one has spoken about him this offseason
4) If he was a bear, what kind of bear he would be
5) Favorite Power Ranger

This makes no sense whatsoever. If Godfrey turns out to be another Holdman, I will have lost all confidence in the FO.

No Sh*t.

I was just coming on to ask when the next round of cuts was due. Anyone know the date?

WTF? No way this makes sense. How does the guy entrusted to save the position after Pierce get cut just two seasons later after doing an ok job at it? For an old guy. Strange.

Let's think about it rationally rather than automatically thinking the front office doesn't know what they're doing and we're losing some sort of superstar in Marshall.

Releasing Marshall makes sense if he's still not 100% recovered from last year. He was very ineffective last year when banged up.

This move makes sense if the coaches feel Godfrey brings more to the table as a veteran backup LB.

Additionally, this move makes sense if the coaches are confident in their other backups like Blades, K. Campbell, Sartz, etc.

Here is Godfrey's Scouts Inc. profile:

2006 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Grade: 71 | Key
Alert: AD

Comment:
Godfrey is experienced, instinctive and pretty athletic. He has good recognition skills and can get to the ball quickly. He still has good range inside the box. He can slide, stay square and attack downhill. He will square up and hold his ground when stepping up at the point of attack in two-gap technique. He uses his hands well when taking on blocks. He can avoid and separate from blocks when moving downhill. He is a good all-around tackler. He has above average zone awareness. He is decent in coverage in underneath zones. He times up zone blitzes well inside and on the perimeter. But Godfrey is aging, has declining athletic skills and has become more of a two-down player. He lacks great cover skills. He is cut high and struggles to react quickly and change directions off zone drops. He isn't especially explosive in stack-and-shed mode. He has trouble keeping his feet clean when moving through trash. He has some durability concerns.

This is highly suprising. I don't know whether to believe this is true or not, on one hand Adam Schefter is reporting it, and he won't say something like that unless it actually happened, and on the other hand it's from PFT. What did the front office not see in Marshall? He was not a good middle linebacker last season, but he's a quality outside backer. If this is true I hope Godfrey is good, I don't want him to be another Holdman.

Godfrey can still contribute a lot in my opinion. Looking specifically at signing him, the move doesn't bother me. But, looking big picture at it, I don't know why Marshall had to be the one to "suffer" for it. Is he hurt? Did he ask for his release to have a chance elsewhere?

Perhaps more importantly though, this move tells me that they're concerned with Marcus Washington's health (more so than they're letting on) and wanted another veteran starting out there.

Can't find a bit of confirmation for this yet anywhere.

Any other confirming sources?
