I heard on the NFL network that the Skins had to act fast on Godfrey because the Eagles want to sign him. Thats all I got to say about that.

ESPN reported that the iggles had a special conference for Trotter's release & the owner made a statement.

It would've been nice for the skins to do something similar for LM. He spent his career here & made the team against the odds & even started at 2 positions. Plus, like Trotter, he was popular among teamates.

As for the nfc east, I won't be surprised if the iggles or giants look to pick him up, but I will be surprised if he starts there, or somewhere else for that matter. Not many, if any, teams want a linebacker that small. I could see somebody picking him up to use him as a nickel/3rd down LB. He's better in coverage than most.

THIS IS MY TAKE ON IT:

I think that the Redskins, along with being unimpressed with his recovery from his injuries, were impressed tremendously with McIntosh and that caused LM to fall on the depth chart. I believe, as a former starter, he had problems with being placed behind RM. He then began to work with the 2nd teams, and he morale went down.

Then, LM went to the staff to express his concern, but they were set in their appraisal of the roster, so they chose, as a measure of good faith, to release him early so that he can get picked up later by another team.

Thats a classy move by the front office. If they know that he wont make our team and they arent moved by his performance, let him og early and hope he gets picked up by another team.

This also means that the team feels confident about the depth at the LB spot. Thats a good sign if u ask me.

That's realistic & a good way to look at it. The only thing i'd note in your scenario is that LM said he was surprised by the cut, so it doesn't appear on the surface that he & the staff really discussed his situation until they decided to cut him.

Another thing to consider is that he would be a free agent after this season I believe. Maybe they knew they wouldn't re-sign him so let him go now. I still don't like it. I would've rather seen him go next year when Wynn, Daniels & some others are likely not to be on the roster.

Interesting theory. In any event, the move is perplexing but it will take a year or two to judge the move with any certainty. It could turn out to be a mistake if a starter is injured and our depth proves insufficient. It could also turn out to be a good move if it gives guys like Blades or Sartz more playing time in the preseason and with the second team in practice and one or both of them turns out to be decent.

They have two young players that they feel have done a better job so he got cut. They brought in a Vet to help them and he will be gone next year. For the ones who say we should have just kept him around for another year then cut him Why?

Depth, Leadership and Skill
We won three super bowls with veteran backups like Monte Coleman, Kurt Guovea, Mel Kaufmann. When an injury happened, or even if it is just to spell someone for a play or two, there was no drop off in play.
It is NOT a fact that Khary Campbell, ANthony Trucks or Dalls Sartz are currently better than Lemar Marshall. It has not been proven on NFL game field that they are better. Practice or preseason is not the same as a regular game. Not the same intensity.
Last year we took a chance on two rookie DT's Montgomery and Golsten. When Griffen and Salavea were injured the middle of our defense collapsed because the rookies DT's were not ready. Now the same scenario is in place for the LB's, they may not all be rookies, but there is no back up LB in his prime and with game experience. Godfrey is too injury prone because he is old.

I didn't see him as a run stopper either, he was always better in coverage.

Key play last year when he tackled dallas' barber for a safety.

What have we seen of Godfrey to think he's an upgrade? I would think if he's an upgrade, then that places him in "starters" category. And if he's good enough to start, why has he been bouncing around the league for the past five years? Unless it's an obvious upgrade, then it's not an upgrade in my opinion. Godfrey won't even if be Skin next year...hell, he might not even make through camp.

Obviously the coaches are privy to something that we aren't as fans.

Well said 12th. I woke up this morning and turned on comcast sports network to see Lemar, Golston, and someone else handing out free Redskins book-bags to some elementary school kids. Wow, only to hear later in the day that one (IMHO) of the better OVER acheivers cut. So, he had a down year last year, who didn't?.?. This guy was a play-maker in 05'. Anyway, thanks for the great memories Lemar. Sorry to see you go.
