I think it just might happen during the season at some point, but what's the rush? He's not going anywhere right now.

Typically, when a player is in his last year of a deal, there will be grumblings of "Let's see if I'm wanted here - it's in their hands." This is to spur talks where none exist.

We've heard nothing from Cooley about an unwillingness to negotiate, so I would presume that negotiations are either ongoing or soon-to-be.

We were saying what's the rush with Dockery last year but as the year went on there was no news with him and we all know how that turned out. I just want to see him locked up before his price keeps going up. It'll be a lot easier to sign him right now rather than wait after the season, because if he has an awesome season he'll want more money at the end.

I am not assuming FA - I'm just throwing the question out there.

Do you really think it is wise to wait, even if he is under contract? It just seems like the longer we will wait, the more he is going to cost.

Well, we waited til the end of the season for Betts, might as well wait for Cooley too.
Who knows, maybe Cooley has been offered a contract but would rather test the FA market?
Why do you instantly assume it's the FO?

ps- He IS still under contract, so waiting as long as possible is a good thing, as long as Cooley doesn't get pissed over it.

Cooley has said that both sides were talking but he was leaving it up to his agent to work everything out. Perhaps it's Cooley's side that wants to wait... especially after seeing how insane the market was this year. Let's not be so quick to decide that it's the front office to blame, there are two parties to every negotiation.

I agree - the Dockery situation is what freaks me out. Dock had a great season last year and although we might have wrapped him up before the season we waited. I really think Cooley is going to blow up this season - call it a hunch. And if he goes for like 70 catches / 800 yards / 8 TDs or something like that, I just have a feeling he is going to be able to get some big money out there.

Shockey signed a 5 year 26 million dollar deal a couple of years ago I believe. I got to think if Cooley has a year like I mentioned, his agent will be looking for something around what Shockey got - maybe even more. Will the Skins pay that kind of money for a Tight End?

They better if they paid 31 mil. for Archuleta's mediocre ass. As for Cooley if he wants to test free agency I will be extremely disappointed. There's a lot of teams out there with a lot more cap space than us and all it could take is one of them to offer a crazy insane contract to Cooley and he could be gone. Dockery got 49 mil from a team that is known for being one of the cheapest teams in the league. Everybody in free agency that has a reputation for being a solid player is getting big money.

Cooley would have the most worthless agent in the world if they went ahead and signed a contract extension. Cooley and his agent will take note of how smart Dockery's agent was and wait for his market value to peak. It's not all about when the Redskins front office decides to extend a player's contract.

Cooley will get paid, don't worry.

Right now just isn't a great time, the front office needs to save some room for an emergency or if a surprise name hits the wire.

There are two players who would make me sick to see them in another team's colors: Cooley and Taylor.
