He did not have the luxury of playing on the talented teams that B Mitch played on. Nelms played on some mediocre redskin teams. He was the only pro bowl player a few years. Nelms hardly ever fair caught a punt. He would refused During Nelms prime, I remember teams punting out of bounds to avoid giving him the ball. He was instant offense. Nelms was such a vicious hitter on special teams that the redskins used him on goal line Defense as a safety. He would hit so hard that the coaches took him off defense after he injured his shoulder. But while he played on D he was a feared player a la Sean Taylor. 12thMan 07-12-2007, 04:23 PM Nelms was the best/toughest returner we have ever had. He led the NFL in yards per kickoff return twice (1981, 1982) and was the Redskins starting punt returner in Super Bowl XVII. In Super Bowl XVII, he returned 6 punts for 52 yards, both Super Bowl records, along with 2 kickoff returns for 44 yards. |
