I just caught something on the world news about this new phone/ everything (iphone)? , I've never heard of. The showed folks in NY camping out till tomorrow for the damn thing? Reminded me of people waiting to get tics to a Grateful Dead show or something.

They also said the price is $500-600? Damn thing made of GOLD?

Don't know anything about, but it sounded like it has a ton of features....but not $500-600 worth, for me anyway!

Who's getting one of these things?

It would be nice, but it will probably have a lot of glitches. The new Apple is long on hype and short on quality.

oh yeah, people already are camping out i hear. whatever, let them spend their time. Also on craigslist people are paying people to wait in line for them. Like $100 bucks so for a high school kid doing nothing in the summer that isn't bad.

I am not even considering it. I mean the iphone (or ipod) isn't that much more special than things that are already out there. The ipod was never really that special but they marketed it well. I don't really understand how they did it considering there are many mp3 players that do the same and more for cheaper. The iphone is more special than the ipod in this sense. It is more unique to other phones than the ipod is to other mp3 players. It has an easier interface and it will have cool 3rd party applications that will be made for it. I think the 3rd party applications will be one of the more important parts but they'll cost money too. Still there are phones that do all the stuff the iphone do but cost 200 after a new agreement with a carrier.

On the news today they interviewed some people who have been in line for 5 days. These people need to get a life. One of the people they interviewed was acting like some big shot because he was first in line. I can see him now in some bar bragging that he purchased one of the first Iphones and as he is showing it off it crashes loosing all his info. I'm sure that will be a chick magnet.

The ipod was basically the first mp3 player with a slick user interface to hit the market, and the tie in with itunes really helped them sew up the market. I think the ipod has something like 70%+ control of the mp3 player market, that's just insane.

SERIOUSLY. These are the same people who say they are "glad to be part of the Mac community." I'm totally paraphrasing but I was reading this on some other site and the guy is like, "Part of the Mac community?!?! It isn't a f***king social movement, it's a computer!"

Exactly. They were first to market with a decent product and had most major labels tied up in contracts so people could easily and legally get music. They were exteremly unique in this regard and it is the main reason they have commanded such a large market cap. As for the iPhone I imagine they will be able to use iTunes as leverage similarly but with much less effect. I am dubious that they can penetrate the already ultra-competitive phone market with any great amount of success. They simply have no differentiation, expect for price, and in that regard it is a bad differentiation.
