I know you can get a free credit report either once or twice a year from the three major companies. www.annualcreditreport.com
To piggy back on your thread, is there a cheap way to get your credit score? The report doesn't give you that. =(

Run up a little credit card debt each month and pay it off. Cancel all but one or two of your credit cards if you have more than that.

I use freecreditreport.com. They send me an email every month to keep me up to date on my credit score, and they also send an email any time there is a change to my score. It's a great service.

I use equifax monitoring... it's 100 bucks a year, but you can't beat the peace of mind... some dude jacked my identity a year ago and i was able to cancel out two new credit cards he started under my name within three months.
