Nothing new here, but at least it's something to talk about other than picking up Joe Schmoe lineman:
ESPN.com - NFL - Clayton: NFC big questions (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=2858916&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines)
http://espn.go.com/i/teamlogos/nfl/med/trans/was.gifWashington Redskins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=was)
Can another safety help the pass rush?
Joe Gibbs thought LaRon Landry (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=8260) was the best defensive player in the draft, so he made him the sixth pick after repeated efforts to trade down. Now the Redskins have two of the most talented safeties in the league -- Landry and Sean Taylor (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6764), who was the fifth pick in the 2004 draft. The problem is the Redskins passed over a pass-rusher, Jamaal Anderson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=8262), to take Landry. The Redskins are calling all around to see if a veteran pass-rusher is available. The Redskins had only 19 sacks last season. Without any pressure on the quarterback, opponents had a 97.8 quarterback rating against them. Unless the Redskins can find a way to get a pass rush, Landy and Taylor might get a lot of opportunities to get tackles downfield.

I just mentioned this article in another thread. It says here that we are still actively looking for another pass-rusher, yet Gibbs said he is confident in our D-line as is. So what gives? I wonder who we are "calling around" to...
freddyg12 05-03-2007, 05:33 PM I'm sure we are testing the waters some. I don't think Gibbs is being contradictory by saying he's fine w/the d line & looking for additional help at the same time. I think he's playing politics w/his existing troops to some degree, but he's always had confidence in vets & confidence that he could get more out of them.
I would honestly be surprised if we suddenly threw some big $ at somebody though. There are still a couple possibilities, but there's nobody that is real big time.
One guy I've been wondering about is Jevon Kearse. I recall someone mentioning him a few months ago as a potential june 1 cut. He has a history w/GW at Tenn. At this point in his career he's probably best as a situational pass rusher, which is what we need most, assuming he can get most of his burst back.

Don't get me wrong, I love Kearse. He's a Gator and a great guy, but he's over 30 now and so darn injury prone....

yeah, he's injury prone that's why he'd have to be a situational pass rusher (if he can still do that). wouldn't want to play him a lot of snaps.
Is he over 30 already? He was drafted in 2000 or so right?

dude will be 31 at season's start!
he might be able to contribute, have a couple more good years.
I'd rather see Hickman make the team, but I wouldn't be opposed to having Kearse in camp for vet min.
Rajmahal33 05-03-2007, 06:41 PM the big question is will he be cut. any credible indications of that?
Longtimefan 05-03-2007, 07:16 PM There's no way Gibbs does not recognize the need for help in the d-line. and to ignore it, or pretend it does not exist is a mistake. Because there was no one at #6 they wanted to pay does not make the need go away.
skinsfan_nn 05-03-2007, 08:32 PM Joe says he's confident.....? until we sign our next player. Then HE IS REALLY confident! Just like I will be.
