With the way the nfl cap works most of you all know teams can split cap hits by waiting till June 1st to cut/trade a player. My question is doesn't the current setup restrict trades because the draft is a month before this date - see example below...
Schneed had a message that the Skins may trade Shawn Springs to get an additonal draft pick(s). But with trades prior to June 1st, I thought that the cap hit/release fees counted immediately to the upcoming year. So with Springs his cap hit woiuold all come in the 2007 season because it was prior to June 1st - right?
Wouldn't it be in the best interest of teams and players if the June 1st date was moved to some date before the draft so teams could make trades prior to the draft like Schneed had pointed out with Shawn Springs? It would help teams like the SKins who are short on draft picks, teams that may think the need one expreienced vet(like a Shawn Springs) to get over the top, and finally it would be helpful to players because they may be cut after June 1st when teams have already solidified their rosters through the draft and spent the big bucks on unrestricted free agents.
Why doesn't the NFL change this - I don't see the advantages of the June 1st date for either teams or players - can someone explain why the current date is after the draft?
