Except that they are convertable to auto fire. Yes, it takes some knowledge and is illegal BUT for those who desire to do so, it can be done AND it can't be done with standard rifles or semi-auto pistols.
ALL semi-automatic weapons are convertible to auto fire.
Most, if not all are quite complicated to convert, and the parts are next to impossible to get, if not impossible. Oh, by the way, It's a Federal offense "to possess" them.
It's not what people generally think
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 04-18-2007, 03:37 PM Well it looks like their agenda is to get more money coming to them from congerss and yes they want to get assult weapon bill back inforce. Did not have much time to read any more.
IACP - What's New - What's New (http://www.theiacp.org/documents/index.cfm?fuseaction=document&document_id=931)
It's not as though the mission is to get money for the sake of getting money....the money is simply a means to an end. Their end (aka agenda) is to promote police and public safety.
JoeRedskin 04-18-2007, 03:38 PM Sorry, it looked like to me that the specific goals listed all had to do with getting more and better educated officers on the streets. I got no problem with that.
Yes - it's called attempting to stay alive while protecting the citizenry.
It's a job. like any other. They would prefer to have it easier than more difficult. Like anybody else. I can understand why they would prefer nobody packin', rather than everybody.

That would be nice if we could make their jobs easier. I don't think we should strive to keep them busy.
Mostly, we are saddled with a justice system that has lost it's effectiveness, and not longer works. We do not need more laws. We need a system that works. Building more prisons is not working.......all that good

I agree that the conversion is difficult. I was unaware that a semi-auto pistols could, in fact, be converted into fully automatics.
Under the applicable law, what is defined as an "assault gun".

I would prefer thay have it easier as well SGG. that won't happen until the justice system changes.
I doubt you'll find any cop that disagree's with that.
firstdown 04-18-2007, 03:44 PM That's exactly what I feel should be done. The easiest solution for this is that anyone who seeks treatment for a mental condition either voluntarily or involuntarily would be subject to an evaluation for firearms as well. What I mean by that is if while in treatment, a doctor is alerted to a specific type of behavior he deems dangerous, then the doctor would be required to send a notice to NICS. It could be a temporary notice or a permanent one. The only way that person could get the alert taken off would be for them to have their doctor to contact NICS or by a court order. That way there is an alert in a national database for everyone else to see when they are running backgrounds.
The problem is the NRA and the privacy folks will jump all over this. They might agree that it's a good idea in part, but will make the argument that if we do it, then we will begin sliding down a slippery slope.
That gives doctors alot of power.

No, it's not a job "like any other". I am not sure what your occupation is, but I guarrantee you that mine, those of my co-workers and the VAST majority of my friends and aquaintances does not require me to, on a regular basis, confront and/or restrain violent criminals. Further, generally speaking, body armor is NOT part of my normal business dress - even on business casual day.
