Big C 04-17-2007, 12:03 AM Why is everyone being so critical of the police force? Isolate the whole campus and cancel classes and make everyone stay inside? This was a freak, tragic accident. Who knew that an isolated event would blow up to this?
vcu is thinking of ya!
they didnt have the person who killed 2 people on campus. they needed to cancel classes to keep people safe right then or shortly after, and due to their desire to keep classes going (this school is famous for NEVER canceling class) this is the end result.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 04-17-2007, 12:09 AM GM...ive wanted to punch a lot of things today, including some dickheads i was in a building with that we were evacuated into. they were celebrating the fact that classes were canceled at the expense (at the time we only knew of 2 deaths) of 2 dead people. u have no idea how badly i wanted to fight them
What immature a-holes. That's pretty damn disgusting.

Yeah I could imagine UVa doing that too. The administration here seems to pride itself on allowing class to run no matter what.
The sad thing is VT is gonna get a terrible public image because of all of this, but this could have happened at any school.
KLHJ2 04-17-2007, 12:39 AM My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those kids.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 04-17-2007, 01:05 AM Apparently the shooter was a 24 year old male from China. I went to a university that had an engineering school that had a notorious reputation for a string of suicides among young Asian males from foreign countries. The typical story went as follows - the kid's parents shelled out a ton of money to send their kid to America to get a great university-level education in one of the "hard sciences," the parents put enormous pressure on the kid to excel, the kid felt really physically and emotionally distant from everything he knew (which, of course, was back in China, Japan, etc), and either the didn't perform as well in school as his parents expected and/or the kid became so isolated that he went insane. It sounds like this idiot snapped after his girlfriend boke up with him, but I would venture to guess that the break-up was simply the straw that broke the camel's back.
I do not mean to focus on the shooter at a time when so many are grieving about the victims, but I thought my personal college experience might be worth a read.

The shooter at VT was a 24 y.o. male from China. The people who committed suicide at my alma mater were usually young males from China or Japan attending the engineering school.
I don't know what took place at VT or why the shooter went insane, but when I heard that he was Chinese, it just reminded me of the articles I read about the people who committed suicide at my school.

Thanks for clarifying. They do sound like similar scenarios.

big C, first off i'm glad your ok. i'm not disagreeing with your post but i saw on tv this morning that the VT police thought the first shooting was an isolated event and more importantly, they had leads that lead them off campus. for those two hours in between the two shootings the police were following those leads. so yea, in hindsight, it's easy to say they should have locked down everything but at the time of the first shooting the police thought they were doing the right thing. anyways, i just wanted to put that out there. i didn't know if this was new information or not.

The RA came around telling people that classes were cancelled and the guys a couple of doors down started celebrating and yelling about getting drunk on a Tuesday or some shit. I had been up for a couple of hours by that point so I knew what was going on; I watched the second plane fly into the Tower live on TV. Obviously the guys down the hall didn't because after a minute or two of acting like complete idiots they must have heard the news and they went silent.
Anyways, I can't imagine how you feel today and I feel so sorry that you have and everyone at VT have to deal with tragedy.
