skinsfan69 03-30-2007, 12:02 PM At first I did not like this deal, but after I thought about it I did not hate it as bad. We would have a pro bowl linebacker, behind Carter and it might solidify that side against the run. It would also free Carter up to rush the passer more. For them to make this deal, I think we should insist that they take Rocky and give us a second rounder. If we don't we will destroy him anyway.
The problem is Carter can't hold up against the run anyway cause he's too small. So Briggs is going to be trying to cover his ass. Remember the last game of the season? Tiki ran for 234 yards. And most of it was right over
Carter getting pushed around by 50 year old Bob Whitfield. Carter needs to be only playing on passing downs. But that's another whole nother subject.
SmootSmack 03-30-2007, 12:05 PM What about Rocky? Honestly, that's my only true concern. The dollars aren't really an issue and if Bly can get $18 million guaranteed then Briggs can get $20 million. And I think this draft is deep enough on the line that we can still get help at #31
But, we moved up to draft Rocky and then spent money on Fletch. So what's the plan with them? Is Rocky already on the outs? Is he being groomed as the heir apparent at MLB? Is this part of GWill's "everyone's a starter philosophy"
skinsfan69 03-30-2007, 12:07 PM My biggest gripe is that there is so much u can do with that 6th pick I can't understand why someone in their right mind would trade it a month before draft day! For a F@#%ing big name player who most likely will not fit in our system. Just let me be the gm for one season, I'd have a championship team. This IS SO FRUSTRATING, I might pickett in front of Redskins Park... Anyone with me?
I'm with you bro. You never know who is going to drop on draft day. It makes no damn sense what so ever. Gibbs, Vinny, and Dan just don't have a clue what the hell they are doing. If this goes through my faith w/ Gibbs is in the toilet.
CallMeGreen 03-30-2007, 12:32 PM I hope people realize that trading down is no guarantee.
Exactly true. But, while picking at #6 statistically might have better odds of picking a winner, that too is no guarantee.
My thinking says trading down has two distinct advantages:
1. Several positions of need. Leaving the gap (in pick chances) open from the #6 pick until their next pick in Round 5 doesn't help fill those positions of need.
2. Risk averaging. By getting several, albeit lower, picks, the cost of the risk incurred is spread out over those several picks. With one selection at 6 (or 31 if it comes to pass), #6 becomes an all-or-nothing choice. To have the holes we have, and then potentially select a DUD at 6 means another wasted draft opportunity.

That's the main thing that irks me about this deal too.
Someone obviously had high hopes for Rocky last year... so did we really whiff that badly on him or is this simply another case of this FO falling in love with a big name FA?
Paintrain 03-30-2007, 12:38 PM Options 2 & 3 for me and also, what's the rush to do this now? It's obvious that Briggs isn't close to an extension with the Bears.. We don't seem to be competing with anyone else for his services in a trade so why make this move so urgently.
If the Raiders interest in Johnson is true then that throws the entire top 10 into flux. Quinn, Russell or Peterson will likely be there at 6 so we're in perfect position for a trade down. If they are all gone and we don't like who is left, then pull the trigger on the deal but doing something like this so far in advance of the draft is stupid.
I like Campbell, but I can't help but think we got bent over with what we had to give up for him 2 years ago when there may have been a possibility to get him lower for less rather than do something a week before the draft.

what did we give up to get Campbell? Wasn't it just a 3rd round pick? That's worth every bit of it since it bought a year of experience for him. We've made some terrible trades, but that one was about as good as it gets.

And at least last year's first round pick, which meant that we felt like we needed to trade this year's 2nd so we could move up and get Rocky.

We gave up a first and a thrid.. I don't have a problem with getting Campbell, I think he is going to be a stud.. I just think if we had done the deal on draft day rather than a week before we could have made a better deal.
#56fanatic 03-30-2007, 01:12 PM Just a question, would anyone be happy if we got Briggs and were still able to get a quality defensive lineman at #31?
I have sat here and thought should I respond or shouldn't I. the dumber side of me outweighted the reason side, so here goes :
1) I for one have been a strong supporter of the proposed deal. We get a lower 1st round pick, which the FO has said they wanted to do. I believe we could get a quality DT at the bottom of the draft.
2) We get a 26 year old probowl LB. I for one think, outside of Marcus, our LB play was horrible last year.
I have and always will be one of the fans who can't stand the way the FO runs this team. As far as overpaying for marginal talent, or unproven talent. But, when it comes to Briggs he is far from marginal. 26, one of the best as his position, a playmaker, arriving his prime, high motor, plays with a chip on his shoulder. I just feel last year we didn't have that swagger that we had to two previous years. Adding Briggs may get some of that back.
Now, bad side -
1) Rocky will be on the bench. We would have wasted 2 draft picks on him if we sign Briggs.
2) money. Briggs will get BIG money
3) chemistry. We will have to get rid of some players that are good locker room, role player type guys that contribute.
I will be fine with what ever they decide or what ever way this works out. I just feel from a football stand point he is a major upgrade. I think the FO feels Rocky may not be the guy if they are looking at this deal. How they can come to that conclusion so soon, I have no idea. but there has to be something there.
