Rule change: spiked ball?

I heard something on the radio about a 5 yard penalty for spiking the ball. It was that along with throwing it in the air, both applied when not a touchdown. I have two questions about this. 1) Did I hear correctly? 2) Is this only for when a play is dead? Or will spiking the ball to stop the clock late in the game result in a 5 yard penalty.

I didn't hear anything about it, but with the fervor against any type of celebration, I'd bet they're talking about receivers and running backs spiking the ball after a 3rd down conversion, that sort of thing.

Remember how Rod Gardner used to 'flip' the ball after a catch? I thought they already had a rule in place against "spinning" the ball, but I don't think I ever saw it called.

On touchdowns though, if the league really wanted to crack down on excessive celebration, they'd call the touchdown back.

I think you should be penalized if you don't celebrate.

And if your celebration is awesome, you get an extra point.

Seriously though, are these rules not starting to get a bit ridiculous. I loved the famous redskins high five, I loved the little dances, all that crap.

F... rich people that make all the rules.

Spiking the ball to stop the clock and on TD's is okay. They are going to vote on assessing a 5yd penalty for spiking out of bounds. I found this clip from the St. Pete Times Forum:

"The owners also will vote on Tampa Bay's proposal to use instant replay for all penalties except holding; increasing the number of players suited up for games from 45 to 47; and instituting 5-yard penalties for players who spike the ball on the field of play. Spikes in the end zone after scores would be allowed."

Here's another link to an informative article on the new discipline policy:

As image conscious as Goddell is, none of this is a surprise to me.

I have no problem with stopping ball spikes after regular old catches. Whoop-de-damn-doo. I caught an 8-yard hook. Suck it, defense!

Santana's going to need to cut out his first down-ball spin move if this goes down.

ok this is just stupid these are GROWN MEN and godell and the owners want to treat them like babies and shit it is just stupid i say let every player have their celebration when they score think back to 2005 with the celebrations steve smith, chad johnson, clinton portis u had non football fans tuning in just to see what those guys did when they scored the NFL needs to stop trying to make the nfl like elementary school

"now now chad u cant be happy after you score you must look bitter like bill parcells and act like you didnt want to score"

In my defense, that's a djnemo65 (http://www.thewarpath.net/member.php?u=375) quote. His name didn't fit in the sig.

Personally, I don't discriminate between Japanese girls and any other girls. They all reject me equally.

I must admit, I used to love Rod Gardners first down dance (the three times we saw it) I like Santana's too. I didn't feel that it delayed the game at all and honestly liked it a bit. However, I can live with this rule change, however I'm with many other that the deal with touchdown celebrations is getting absurd. People love watching TD antics, I don't care if the defense feels bad, don't let them score next time. If you're going to do anything stop the stupid "I made a tackle!" dances. That and ban Steve 'funny teeth' Smith from doing anything, god his dances suck. I woke up early this morning.
