GTripp0012 03-13-2007, 08:01 PM EXACTLY.
I've been going blue in the face trying to get people to understand this around these parts.
The Skins have cleared $10 million in cap space. Rookies will fit in about $3-$4 million of space. They're clearly preparing to take a big cap hit.
If they kept Springs, he'll cost $7.3 million as his contract stands now. If they trade him, he'll essentially cost us the same thing. So even after trading him, we'll still have $10 million in space. The writing is on the wall; they cleared this cap space to release somebody, absorb the hit now, and clear them off of our troubled 2008 and 2009 books. This move by the Skins in delaying Archuleta's payment is clearly a sign that the team is preparing to make a move.
He's as good as gone in my opinion.David Patten is also a 2 mil or such cap hit and he's like our non-teams playing 4th receiver. I'm not sure pushing back the bonus means anything in light of the fact that he's guarenteed it no matter what.
GTripp0012 03-13-2007, 08:13 PM You're dreaming. He got burned by Witten so badly with the game on the line that he flat out got laughed at by Witten. Lucky for Archuleta, Troy Vincent and Nick Novak saved the friggin day.
He's worthless, he'll never play well for us.I don't think an average starting caliber safety has the ability to cover the athletic TE in man to man coverage. Lord knows Sean Taylor doesn't.
The reason Archuleta sucked last year was because he was brought in to be a defensive enforcer and he couldn't make a damn tackle. Obviously the dude didn't forget everything he knew about tackling that offseason, so it was very clearly a physical ailment that kept him from doing his job. It's won't be hard for our coaching staff to find out in camp if this ailment is going to create similar problems this year.
I say we don't risk cutting a guy who very plausibly could have been healed by the lack of PT he got down the stretch of the season so he can go somewhere else and be the player he was in STL. We have guys like Lloyd and Patten on the roster who aren't going to improve at all,we should get their salaries off the books while we have a chance.
CrazyCanuck 03-13-2007, 09:24 PM I don't understand why people keep saying we can't absorb Arch's cap hit. He has a 9 mil release fee, but is due a 2.5 mil salary. That means it costs the team 6.5 mil to release him. We have 10 million right now. Why did we push back other players salaries and not sign free agents unless we had a plan to release a big cap hit guy? As I have said before, maybe they have a deal in place to trade for Bly and need money for him, or if that doesn't work, they will cut Arch.
EXACTLY.

Double true!
It definitely looks like we've freed cap space to take a big deadcap hit, and the only 3 players that logically fit the mold are Arch, Lloyd, and Patten.
AA want's out just as bad as we want him out, that is why they have an agreement to extend his bonus, I would be fairly sure that he is willing to kick back money if it lands him with the right team, he knows he's going to get a big check regardless, I just think he was so humilited last season that he has something to prove and knows he can't do it in Williams system, he knows his strengths and weakness's and wasen't used to his strength and from what I can remember he flat out called us liers about the condition of how he would be used when he signed. I think something will get done I just don't think he will bring back anything but some cap relief.
Agreed. I also think Arch is the guy to go.
However I still think we can get something in a trade for him. Keep in mind this is a guy who LAST year commanded a $10M signing bonus. Obviously we overpaid, but if we didn't someone else would have surely given him $5M-$7M at least.
This is the same guy that can now be had for the LEAGUE MINIMUM in 2007. And his salary for 2008 is only $1M. And the acquiring team doesn't have to give him any signing bonus or any bonus whatsoever on top of his salary. And the acquiring team can cut him at any time for a deadcap hit of ZERO if things don't work out.
Is this not worth something to someone? Can a player's stock fall so far in one year?
My money's on a trade to the Bears. They wanted him bad last year, plus their D is good enough that Arch won't have to do too much. And like offiss suggested, maybe Arch would even give back some of the money to play for the defending NFC champs.
skinsfan_nn 03-13-2007, 10:03 PM There's only one reason I want that man to stay around... and it's how his a*s looks in that all white uniform....
I think I'm gonna PUKE. :benched: Kinda looks like ARCH?

A trade with the Bears is possibly, due to Lovie.
But his stock fell so far, I thought it was Black Friday!
I would much rather see them keep this kid one more year. Use him to his strengths and so how he does, it can't be any worse. He MIGHT suprise??
Give Lloyd a one way ticket to nowhere.

Give Lloyd a one way ticket to nowhere.I agree. Give Lloyd's roster spot (and Patten's) to an up and coming receiver who could someday start for us. A guy with some potential.
6 million is a lot to pay to cut your options at the safety position.

ok arch will be with the team next year and he better produce or something will happen to arch hahahahahahahahahahaha REALLY!!!!!!!!! j/k but he better produce all that damn money we are paying him and same goes for brandon lloyd disapointing bastards got me excited for nothing last year

They just simply aren't good enough. However, of that list, Archuleta has had the best career so far. So if I'm trying to make arguments to justify the deals, Arch would be the guy I could best do it for.
Archuleta simply has to prove to me that he can still tackle. If he comes back next year and starts popping some heads, we don't have a better second safety option on this team. Worst case scenario, give the job to Prioleau and have an experienced backup.
We would be wise to eliminate the contracts of Lloyd and Patten from the books, take the cap hits this year, and replace them with some young, cheap talented receivers who can play special teams.

I must be the only one left (beside Lloyd's mama) who thinks Lloyd still has upside and potential. I wouldn't give up on him just yet

we are not going to replace lloyd just yet invested to much in him and all those guys will be much better next year and recievers who can play special teams would be all right i guess but jimoh sellers and khary campbell are great special team players
