Calm down, Smoot was a good pickup and didn't bust the bank. He's still a quality #2/#3 corner. He's certainly a huge improvement over the likes of Rumph/Wright.

Bingo!

We are not anointing Smoot the #1 CB position, but he's a solid #2 and very good after that. He's also better than anyone we have other than Springs, Rogers can be a #1 IMO hopefully he can have a breakout year, I feel he has the talent I just wish Williams would let him get up on the WR and let him bump and run he's very strong for a CB, he might even be better suited for Safety the way he hits.

While I do not agree with chrisl4064's extreme view, I do agree that some folks have a short memory about Smoot's play.
It seems the big Smoot fans only remember the good and not the bad. Unless Smoot finally found his way to the weight room he is 175 pounds soaking wet and with sand in his pockets. While Smoot likes to hit, he will lose against big RB's or Te's.
I still remember the awful game Smoot had as a Redskin in St. Louis against Torry Holt . Torry Holt had a career game and made Smoot look terrible. I was not saddened to see Smoot leave because like recently departed Dockery, Smoot is not worth the contract Vikings signed him for. We were smart not to match and the Vikings found this out the hard way and cut him. WHile Gibbs is putting a good spin on the story of Smoot leaving and now coming back, Smoot is a good CB, not great. He will be a great #3 cb, but not a great #2 or #1. Improvement over last years #3 CB? Yes.

Smoot is a classic #2 - the game you mentioned has him matched one-on-one with Torry Holt. Torry Holt is one of the best receivers in the league statistically, so he's going to beat a #2 every time. Smoot was ill-prepared for a feature role, and it showed. He still had a good enough year to earn a payday from another team, so we lost him.

This team doesn't need him to be a star, but in his career he's been able to shime in smaller roles. It was a good pickup at a good price for us.

i cant stand fred smoot. hes a fan lollypop, everyone loves to yell smoooooot when he makes a play. same with cooooooley, shit anyones name they can do that with people love. lets not forget this loud mouth penalty making machine. he loves washington, no shit, we welcome him with open arms. hes not that good people. the only quality about him i like is that hes physical. but does getting smoot really better our situation, NOOOOO!!!! we are still trying to aquire more corners, why! if smoot was that good we would be done shopping.

can someone please explain to me why nobody other than myself has critisized this move bringing him here.....?

Wow, guys the sky is not falling with Smoot coming back to town. I think everyone is getting overly concerned about the secondary because the front 7 were not near as effective in 2006 as they were in 2005.

From the games that I saw in 2005 compared to 2006, the defensive front (in '05) was much more effective at getting in the QB's face early on a and forcing an early release.

That same quality was not there for the Skins in 2006.

Show me a defense that gets early pressure on a QB and even a mediocre defensive back can excel from that.

So you get Smoot in the offseason, and in April get a day one DE and/or LB and see where it gets you from there. I think the 'Skins will be just fine.

Yeah sandtrap, you hit nail on the head! We simply had no pressure on the qb. And, another (unpopular) reason was because of lavar NOT being here. Throw stones anyone???????????

Bah...Lavar can suck an egg. He was physically talanted but DAMN was he annoying! If we can sign a decent DE in the draft on day, like sandtrapjack said, we should be just fine. Having Smooty back will help the secondary and maybe the DL play will increase in explosiveness as well.
