while i think cooley is a fine tight end, no way we should break the bank for him.

I agree. In my mind, Cooley needs to show us more before people here start getting their panties in a wad about him being signed to a long-term contract. If he tears it up this year and puts up the kind of numbers that warrant a nice, long-term contract, then fine. Sign him up.

Until then, he's just another tight end.

I think CLEARY COOLEY has showed us PLENTY!
If he doesn't deserve a LONG TERM contract on our team I don't know who does?
He's a definite keeper, young, good blocker and fine catcher, team guy & gets it done on the field. What more could you possibly ask for?

I didn't here anyone say anything about superstar?
But not sure what games you've been to and EVER seen COOLEY as an AVERAGE TE. That's crazy. I go to all home games and have never seen him play AVERAGE EVER!
This guy is a PROVEN PREMIER TE in the league and a leader for the SKINS.

This is a guy who's getting paid a 3rd round salary, has eastablished himself as at least a top 10 TE, more like top 5, and hasn't complained once about his money. This is the type of player who you pay to set a good example.

Plus he's vital to the success of the passing game.

Sorry. I didn't realize "superstar" and "PROVEN PREMIER TE in the league" were mutually exclusive.

I don't think he is Antonio Gates but he seems to do everything we ask of the guy. I think you are underestimating his value to the team. There are alot of faster, bigger, and more popular players but this guy fits our scheme tremendously.

My question to you is who can we get for equal or lesser value that will perform at equal or better level. I don't think we should start underpaying on our only consistent short pass/surehanded threat in an offense which is marred by the inability to throw deep.

I think the reality is we should do everything within reason to keep this guy if we can.

Sorry. I didn't realize "superstar" and "PROVEN PREMIER TE in the league" were mutually exclusive.

This should I think sum it up in a simple fashion, from my stand point.
He is ranked 8th or BETTER IN ALL categories for TE in production in the entire NFL.
Stats on nfl.com
I think he is one of the best in the league at his position and has to be paid accordingly. If you let a guy like CC depart, you are going to have to pay BIG BUCKS to replace a player with his talent level.

Cooley way 8th among TE in receptions, 7th in yards, and tied for 4th in TDs. I'd say he is going to want a big payday, but I don't think we will break the bank

Here are the stats for Daniel Graham (http://snap.stats.com/stats/nflinfo/playerstats.asp?id=5907&Submit=Go), the highest paid TE in the league.

If Cooley is a priority, and I believe he should be, we need to treat him as such. He was our top receiver last year, and tied the team lead for receiving touchdowns. Among TEs on the team he had eleven times more catches than all others combined.

Cooley blocks - well. He does everything he is asked to do. He is a free spirit on the team without being a disruption (to anyone but the cheerleaders (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/06/AR2006010602033_pf.html)). Frankly, I think a lot of what we have done with the cap lately (the Brunell refinance which makes him a free agent next year, etc.) is to make sure we have a little cash next year for the Chris Cooleys of the team.
