Yes, one of which played pretty damn well for a rookie and started quite a few games for us, and another one that I know started one game for us, and has some potential. Thats really why i'd rather go DE with our first pick (assumign we keep it) vs DT. Beemnseven 03-09-2007, 11:07 PM Didn't we draft two DT's just last year? Yeah, in the 5th and 6th round -- the first set of DTs by this front office EVER. If you're satisfied with that, great. That's not quite the commitment I'd like to see. MTK 03-09-2007, 11:10 PM Well prior to last year they had addressed DT with free agents, so it wasn't exactly a pressing need in the draft. Last year it was and they took two DTs accordingly. Just saying, for all the crying about the lack of focus on the DL in the draft, they did just draft two guys last year and they'll likely draft at least another one this year. I honestly don't know how anyone who paid any attention could look at the four guys who played at that position last year, who got trampled and gashed all year long, who led us to the #27 ranking in the NFL against the run, cannot admit that we have a serious problem in the middle of the D-line. It would be as insane to say that we could go another year with Archuleta, Wright, Rumph and Rogers in the secondary. It would be as insane to say that we could go another year with Archuleta, Wright, Rumph and Rogers in the secondary. So are you suggesting we should just blow up the d-line personnel? Nobody is denying we have issues, but nobody is saying we are going to stand pat with what we have, we'll probably come out of this draft with at least one significant addition to the line, and we'll have to count on guys like Griffin getting healthy, the further development of Golston and Montgomery, and hope that Carter picks up where he left off last year. Beemnseven 03-09-2007, 11:21 PM Well prior to last year they had addressed DT with free agents, so it wasn't exactly a pressing need in the draft. Last year it was and they took two DTs accordingly. Just saying, for all the crying about the lack of focus on the DL in the draft, they did just draft two guys last year and they'll likely draft at least another one this year. Only after it became apparent that there was a dreadful situation about to materialize did this organization even bother to look at defensive tackles in the draft. Let's be honest, Golston and Montgomery saw action only because there was no one else left to play the position after Griffin and Salave'a got nicked up. Oh sure, they'd go after rejects by the likes of Daryl Gardener, Brandon Noble, and Joe Salave'a ... they'd throw a bone every now and then with a semi-notable signing of Cornelius Griffin. But we've never seen the drive and determination to build a strong run defense with youth the way they've been frantically searching for the knock-out punch at wide receiver. I mean really, you'd never mistake defensive tackle as their favorite target of improvement. skinsfan69 03-09-2007, 11:33 PM The 2001 Draft pissses me off the most - we needed a guard that year and I remember the analysts saying Steve Hutchinson keeps falling and the Redskins had a chance to take him but instead they take WR Rod Gardner instead. Blame that on Marty Beemnseven 03-09-2007, 11:35 PM So are you suggesting we should just blow up the d-line personnel? Yeah, it looks like they've finally wised up and will use this draft to shore up the defensive line. When that happens, I will be a happy Redskin fan. Since you asked, here's what I would do: -- You have to keep Griffin for another year and see how he holds up. If he's able to rejuvenate and play healthy for most of the year, great. But I wouldn't count on him past 2008. I'd peg next years draft as the time to find his replacement. -- With this year's draft, you have to select Joe Salave'a's replacement. I don't think anybody will rationally try to argue that 2007 won't be his last season. -- Dump Renaldo Wynn this year, plan to do the same for Philip Daniels (he can stay and get his three more sacks for 2007). -- Finally, they're young, they're cheap, so do all the high-fives you want over Golston and Montgomery. But do not delude yourself into thinking they are future #1 and #2, long-term answers to the problem for years to come. In short, yes, over the next two offseasons I do believe it is time to start dismantling a very old D-line, and begin training a new crop of a front four -- immediately, if not sooner. Is that asking so much? skinsfan69 03-09-2007, 11:37 PM Why are we always getting the short end of the stick? It seems that every trade we make the other team get two or three picks and we get one, or we give up multiple picks to move up and get a guy. No wonder our depth sucks. We gave up two picks just to get Marty to coach for one year. What the hell is that all about? |
