All you need to know is that if we had signed him to that contract everyone even remotely associated with the league would have blasted us. He maybe sneaks into the top 1/3 of guards but just barely. He struggles to pull and is only an average pass blocker. For what was paid the Bills are getting very little value. Very little. I imagine he is your highest paid O-lineman and I would guess he'll end up being your 2nd best guard really. At any other position we would have been scrambling to replace him this year because he wasn't good enough. At guard his overall lack of dominance was just not a big deal to us because guard is not overtly important. The guy just needs to be able to block someone. Which Dockery can.

Had we resigned him at a reasonable price him we would have exalted his youth and constant improvement. He is surely a good run blocker and seems to progress every year. That's about the most positive I would think we'd be.

I am stunned by his contract and not sorry even remotely that he is gone at that price. A good guy and congrats on the contract but don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

I agree with you FRPLG. I was just reading Peter King's new article, because I'm really bored and don't feel like doing any work, and he just sort of brushed aside the Dockery deal by saying something like "here's a slightly above average guard getting a huge contract because teams have money to burn."
If the teams were reversed and Danny Boy was paying a player of Dockery's talent level that kind of cash King would have gone nuts trying to explain how stupid Snyder is. We would have had to hear how the Skins are willing to pay an arm and a leg just to get mediocre players so that Danny can invite even more movie stars into his booth for games or some such BS.

On a good note, he did seem to think that the 'boys overpaid for Davis. So that's nice.

Why bash king for doing that as people do it here day in and day out.

You should get used to saying, "f***ing Dockery! I remember saying it on a regular basis on gameday. He is good for 2 penalties a game whether it be false starts or a very untimely holding.

Can anyone tell me about offensive guard Derrick Dockery that the Buffalo Bills just paid $49 million over seven years? In the Buffalo media they claim this guy is a stud, that Dockery was a large part of the Redskins rushing success last season. Is this guy really a stud? Is he overrated? Is he the superb run blocker that he is billed to be in the Buffalo press? Would you have preferred that he resigned with the Redskins?

I can tell you this. No way is he worth 49 mil.

I'd say the best thing Dock has going for him is his size. At 6'6" 335, he was the biggest guy on our line. He's still young, so he'll probably improve with the right coaches.

He's definitely overpaid by last year's standards. However, the market has changed since then and nobody really knows what the appropriate market value should be, just yet. It might turn out to be a reasonable deal. I'd just be worried about him not improving -- or even digressing.

I agree. He got awfully serious last year all of the sudden. If he had taken that approach the previous two seasons he might be worth the money they paid him.

Also, I agree that he is the 3rd best lineman. People are saying he's the worst of the 5 but I would rank them like this (just on 2006):

1. Samuels
2. Thomas
3. Dockery
4. Jansen
5. Rabach

I'm eager to see more from Wade.

I would be interested to see how you all rate them.

70Chip, great points on your ranking. Samuels and Rabach had to over-compensate for Doc, and as you state, Rabach is clearly the 5th best b/c of all of his false starts. Doc & Jansen could have flipped places, but still, very good assessment. I agree, Doc is not worth paying a lot for that muffler! Jansen has slid considerably since his surgery a couple of years ago. His mind is willing, but his legs and feet aren't cooperating. He will be terrific as a smooth TV presence when he retires.
