We're always wishing the Skins would be more financially responsible... but for some reason that has gone out the window lately when talking about Dockery.

He's not a player you look at and say we need to sign this guy at any cost.

Yes, continuity and rewarding your own are important things, but with the crazy deals that will be coming down this offseason we need to keep things in perspective.

Dockery is the 5th best lineman we have... at best he's tied for 4th best with Rabach. He isn't irreplaceable. Far from it.Question is, who do we replace him with? Previous lower round draftees, haven't impressed coaches much. Does this point to trading for another day one pick?

Yeah but the price of a competent free agent guard isn't going to go down next season. Teams aren't going to look back on this season and say "man what were we thinking, we should pay these players less."

Next year, a competent free agent like Dockery will command $14 million instead of $12 million.

You want to get away from paying through the nose for competent players, then we have to get more draft centric (which I know everyone wants around here). But keep in mind, contracts for draft picks are going up, too. The increasing salary cap is causing these higher contracts; rising tides lift all boats.

Would you give Dockery $17M up front?

I know some people may never understand this, but we can't bust the bank on Dockery. If he wants a signing bonus of $17M forget about it, he's just not worth it. Let someone else overpay for a slightly above average player. This is only a negotiating figure folks. When you put in your salary requirements, you don't ask for what you currently make, or less, do you? Or course he's not worth that amount of money. He won't get that from another team either. When testing the free agent market, which just started today, you can't take the first deal thrown at you prior to. Now this type of thing has backfired before. Dockery could be without a team for a while before settling for '2nd string' money. The skins may have to make another costly move to aquire a starting quality G via the draft or trade.

Dock is looking for the big payday...we can't give that. If the market drops for Dock, maybe we'll be able to woo him back, but I am doubtful.

I am glad to hear that Clements is pretty much too expensive for us, because it means, for the first time, that it is possible for a player to be too expensive for us!

Cheaper FAs, trade down in the draft, and work with what we got. Hope we land smooty, and that he's ready to re-establish his career.

Overpay for guys coming in from other teams, but don't somewhat overpay for a quality starting Oline man that helped produce the 4th best rushing attack with a backup RB and allowed only 19 sacks, the 3rd best sack performanct in the league.
Yeah, another great move by the redskins front office.
sounds familiar. lets let smoot go for $600k, lets let Pierce walk, lets let clark go. How much did i hear about those guys the past year or two about how we should have kept them?

Dock is not going to be on the market long. there are several teams out there willing to pay one of the up and coming YOUNG, dominant run blocking guards in the NFL. He will get 10million up front if not more.

$17 M? No. That's too high even in the new world order.

But I'd give him $12 million, which is what La Canfora has said he's expecting to get.

Boy am I already sick of this Dockery issue. I hope he signs with someone else fast so we can move on. He is nothing special if you ask me. I mean if some other team gives him a ridiculous contract I am going to be very confused. How do you tell your fan base that this year's awesome free agent addition is Derrick Dockery. How pitiful.

why does every year have to be about what big FA we are going to sign to a mulitmillion dollar deal? Why not take care of the guys we have on team? Dock was one of those lineman that helped this Oline perform as good as any in the NFL. Plus all the other lineman feel Dock should be top priority, they want this line intact. why wouldnt anyone after the year they had last year. It was one if not the only bright spot to another wise miserable season.

I agree that the 17M figure was way out of line. I don't think any other player would expect them to pony that money up.

BUT given the propensity to give big paydays and overpay for outside FA's, I believe that the players would expect them to make a pretty lucrative offer, even if it means overpaying, for one of their own.

FOR EXAMPLE: Okay, you're gonna trade picks and give big money to a guy like Lloyd who you thought could have a big impact. Well, Front Office, here is a guy who has demonstrated his impact on this team - we like him, we want him to stay. Are you gonna make an offer to him that is better than what you would give to an outside FA? Or is this one of those "when I say its a game, you say it's a business and vic versa" situations. Show us that by just being here WE are valuable.
