I Can't Stop Blogging ... Somebody Give Me a Raise (Dock, Brunell and Salary Cap Stuff) - Redskins Insider (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/2007/03/i_cant_stop_blogging_somebody.html)
Alright peeps, got some cap info for you (I don't feel so bad for letting DCsween, Haiku and the boys buy me some shots the other night, 'cause, frankly, I'm earning in now y'all).
I know I wrote earlier that my gut on Dock was they re-sign him. Well, after making a bunch of calls and hearing where this market really could be going (Steinbach getting $16 to sign!!) it seems like Dock could blow past what Jansen got a few weeks back. I hear $12 million guaranteed might be the number to keep Dock, and given all the Skins already have tied up in their offensive line, how crazy this market is going, and their pressing needs on D, I could see them letting him go.
Again, this is all in flux and one phone call from The Owner around 11:55 could get it done, but this seems like a bizarro world market, devoid of immense talent but with cap room spilling over and only a few quality dudes to spend it on. I have a bunch of other Dock-related stuff but I ain't puttin' it all out here now. A) I get the feeling sometimes that I am doing my competition's work for them, and b) gots to give you guys a reason to pony up your 35 cents every morning.
On to the cap, my most beloved main man on all salary-cap issues (you know who you are) tells me the Skins as of today are roughly $6 million under the cap, give or take a few hundy-thou, after yesterday's moves (cutting Fauria and doing a new deal with Brunell).
Also, I got some hard and fast numbers on Brunell. he went from a $6.7 cap hit to $3.5. He gets about $1.1 in base salary, a $500,000 roster bonus in June and, throw in the old proration from the original signing bonus and, VIOLA (oops I did it again), you get the new cap hit.
So, they're 6 under now. Cutting Hall gives them another $1.5. I hear they may not do anything right away on Patten (who would only save $750,000), although I still stick to my original Crystal Ball prediction that he gets let go this offseason. Cuttin Wynn would add another $2.5 in cap space if needed. So they have some wiggle room.
Oh yeah, and one other thing, this Vilma/Portis crap has got to stop. Joe Gibbs love CP. Loves him. Heck, I'll write it again. Loves him. Does not want to think about him not being on the roster. Can't imagine it. They are not shopping him or trying to move him in any way.
Also, spoke to someone very close to Vilma today to try to end that nonsense once and for all. If Vilma is being shopped no one has told him. If the Jets want to move him, no one has told him. There has been no contact from any outside teams. No teams have been granted contact to speak to him.
Could he eventually be traded in his NFL career? Sure. Wayne (bleeping) Gretzky was dealt, twice (right, the St. Louis deal was a trade and not FA, right?). Anyway, it's pretty much impossible to trade a guy in the NFL without him being in on it, because of the cap ramifications and the new contract they usually need from the new team and all of that. And Vilma has not heard a thing.
