You know 70 Chip, I'm going to be honest with you and I don't want to come off ignorant or wishy washy, but-

I have no idea what my position of Carter the player is. It seems to change as rapidly as the emotions of my PMSing girlfriend (relax, hess--its a joke). I do know that the financial implications around him are very important. We can't afford to cut multiple members of the 2006 FA class before the conclusion of the 2008 season. At that point, the backloaded contracts we gave them may start to press our cap situation. Knowing that for the next two years at least, we are stuck with at least 2 out of the 3 (and they all must have 53 man roster spots), I know we must get return on the investment. Must. If we are going to make them all backups, then guys deserving of a roster spot have to go to make room for draft picks. So put me in the "we have to make this Carter thing work" and "Arch deserves a shot to earn the starting role back" groups. ROI (return on investment) is very important when you lock up 50 million in guarenteed money in a FA class.

I don't think anyone understand's my pro-Brunell arguments better than you and Mheisig...and that guy hasn't been around here in forever. Brunell (as we all predicted before last season) did a better job in his 9 starts then Campbell did in his 7. Obviously, Brunell will not be improving as a passer anytime soon, and this franchise is lucky to have had an oppertunity to pull off such a smooth QB transition. And you know as well as I that at no point along this transition did Brunell lose his head for the game. I expect Brunell to continue to produce at an above average level if he's called on (about 4 DPAR/G for those sabre-junkies out there). I don't think Campbell is there yet, but I expect Campbell to exceed this level next season. His last two starts were very, very promising. He appeared to "get it".

And to an extent, it would be somewhat satisfying to see Brunell get a win sometime next season. The reaction around here would be priceless! It shouldn't have to come to that though.

Regarding AA and Lloyd, AA has done it in this league. Lloyd never has. We gave up two mid round draft picks to get Lloyd making it the worse of the two moves. I hold out hope that Arch can redeem himself next season--or at least tackle someone. Lloyd is garbage.

Good Post. I agree that sometimes you have to lie in the bed you make even though it sucks. I think Carter has great athletic ability but they have to scheme better against the power running game if he is going to play every down. Either that or he needs to talk to the Pittsburgh doctor. He's a good pass rusher and he made a few spectacular plays with his speed. Maybe he and Arch will dazzle this season.

I agree that a Brunell relief win would almost be worth his contract in terms of taunting the haters.

Perhaps I am in denial about Lloyd because I want us to have a physically big reciever. I was for signing him. Wanted to ditch him after the Jax game, which was a game in which he had a big catch, and then kind of got tired of the whole thing. I think my quote after the Jax game was that if there was a tree growing on the field, Lloyd would jump up in it to avoid getting hit. I don't know. I think he could be like an Alvin Harper. That's the thing. On a winning team you can find a role for Lloyd or Arch and Carter may well be a Pro Bowler. On a losing team they are what we see them as. If we could just get a few wins, I think they all might look better.

BTW, your post makes it sound like Hesscl34 is your girlfriend.

Mark is a classy guy. He didn't have to give up any money. I would trust him to back up Campbell over Todd Collins anyday. At least Mark has proven he can get a team to the playoffs. What has Collins proven to us? Absolutely nothing.

What a great guy? Please, did he leave any money on the table? And if he did, he possibly would have taken a bigger pay cut elsewhere.

Trust me, it's all business with these guys.
He didn't have to do anything.

I was reading that Ramsey will be a free agent so I guess a few MB hatters will want for us to go after him.

I'm glad to hear this deal got done too. Brunell will be gone after next year, and plus, he's been with us for 3 seasons now and he'll be in Saunders system for a second year. he's not gonna get any experience, but he's not the worst backup in the league.

Man, all this Brunell hate just goes on and on and on. Sure, he had some awful games as a Redskins (had some great one too) and his initial contract was worth a crapload of money (not his fault and he has restructured repeatedly)

But damn the way people talk about him you'd think he pissed on his wife...or set up a hidden camera to videotape his wife's sister...or put a hit out on his pregnant wife...or some of his blood was found the near the crime scene of the murder of his ex-wife and some waiter...or he ran over a cop with his car...or he threatened to kill a bouncer...and so on. (so how long until we see Law & Order: NFL?)

I think Tafkas has become very protective of Mark Brunell and I for one will not talk anymore smack about him until he does something stupid like play again in an NFL game.

I'd feel as comfortable with Brunell coming off the bench as about any other backup given the situation. Just as long as Gibbs knows that no matter how good he plays that is exactly what he is.....a backup.
