National Speed Limit

Yes, for large roads, the speed limit NEEDS to be raised. This isn't the 50s anymore. Our cars can handle speeds much higher now and still drive very smoothly. I think we should set many open highway areas to roughly 75-80 MPH.

As far as anything to limit speed, I don't like it. People will just find ways around them and seems to be a waste of money.

As far as driving in the left lane. That's something that needs to stop. We need to put laws on the books much like on the autobahn. If you're not passing, be in the right hand lane or get a ticket. You also need to pull over people going 10+/- over the speed limit. Going slow on a highway moving that fast can be as, if not more dangerous than going faster than that.

I'll admit. I tailgate, and I've even gone down a road with my horn on till the tourists pulled over. Where I grew up there are many back roads with a 45 mile speed limit. If you can't go 45 miles on it, don't get on it. I get stuck behind lazy tourists who don't want to get their fat asses out of a car and actually take a walk to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Instead they want to drive 15 miles an hour and sometimes stop in the middle of the road to stare at an orange leaf and 3 cows. To these people, I do my best to annoy them for wasting my time.

All this said, residential zones, other roads, etc etc are fine. Because some things you just must go slow for. 25 MPH still might too fast to not kill a kid rushing in front of you.

I like the person who decides that they have to pull out right in front of you making you slam on the breaks and they could have waited as there is no one behind you.

Yes! It's like "I MUST GO NOW!" even though they could have waited HALF a second, LITERALLY and been fine.

OR the ones who have TWO lanes to turn into and still insist on getting in your lane when pulling in front of you...

As to the speed limit, for reasons posted by Schneed, if you raise the maximum, you need to raise the minimum. As for governors on cars, I oppose the idea not because it infringes on anyones civil liberties, but, rather, for economic/enviormental reasons.

As I understand governors, the regulate only the speed of the vehicle such that they allow the engine to turn at a maximum rpm. You don't need to self-regulate and can basically just stand on the gas petal and pour gas out the window but your car won't exceed the governed speed.

As for the "brake tap", my favorite was the time I was on 495 heading south just passed the landover exit. There is a big hill down followed by a sharp rise to the Pennsylvania Ave exit. I am in the 4th lane doing about 65-70 and big rig comes racing up behind me. The third lane is blocked and unless I cut people off and hit the brake, I can't get over. The truck comes up and starts, literally, riding my ass. All I see is grill. I slow down at the top of the hill and continue to do so until I am at about 45 mph. Just as I couldn't, the truck couldn't get out of the lane. At the bottom of the hill I take off. He has no momentum, a big load and a huge hill to climb. I flipped him off as I sped away. If he had just followed at a respectable distance, I would have gotten out of his way when I could - but NOOOOOOOO.

How about the people that tailgate you on a one lane road even though there is a car right in front of you? I want to kill those f'ing people. It's like "Can you not tell that I couldn't go any faster even if I wanted to?"
I want a car that allows me to leave big oil slicks on the road like James Bond. Then I'd show them. Oh yes, I'd show them all...

My favorite are those who ignore Yield signs and plow through into the lane you occupy...then slow down.

I was test driving a car the other day and when I was going back into the auto-park there were people doing that to me. If I hadn't slammed on the breaks I would have had to buy a car with a huge dent in the front.

Did you know that when you test drive THEIR insurance covers it? That's SO awesome. You can total the car and they have to pay for it.
