GMScud 02-27-2007, 06:14 PM I would take Bly and Smoot over Clements in a heart beat... Bly in the past has been regarded as the 2nd best corner in the league. but I hope this doesn't involve the Portis-bly trade
Smoot/Bly could definitely happen, but there are some "IF's" that need to go our way. According to the Wash Post, many in our organization would be "open to bringing Smoot back" if he is released by the Vikes this week (which apparently is more likely to happen than not). The other "IF" is IF Bly, who has been given permission from Detroit to seek a trade, looks to come to DC, what will Detroit want from us? We don't have any depth on defense to give away, and we sure don't have any draft picks to part with (not this year anyway). I really don't want to give them Portis. If we do, we need to get a high draft pick in addition to Bly.
The other possibility is we move Springs to safety to play next to Taylor (provided Springs' restructures, and talks aren't going well). If we could bring in Smoot and/or Bly, that would be a pretty solid secondary...

I just read that John Clayton is doubtful that Matt Millen can turn Dre Bly into anything other than a middle round pick. That's music to my ears!!! I'd give up a 3rd or 4th round pick for a player who is top 5 at his position, under 30 years old, and fills a pressing need. I hope Clayton is right.

There's one big problem with this.We don't have a 3rd or a 4th.So you think Detroit is going to go for our 3rd or 4th next year?I am willing to bet they want a pick this year.

I pray he goes to Denver. If the Lions want a 3rd this year (which we don't have), we'll have to give up next year's 2nd. If the Lions want a 4th this year (which we don't have), we'll have to give up next year's 3rd.
Moreover, Bly will be 30 before the season starts.
GMScud 02-27-2007, 07:01 PM So my best friend is a Jets fan, and he belongs to the GangGreen Message board (pretty much the Jets equivalent of the Warpath, but nowhere near as good :-)). He said there is talk all over the place of Portis and #6 pick to the Jets for Vilma and the #25 pick. And we all know our history of doing business with the Jets. What about this deal? I could do it.. Vilma is the best young middle linebacker in football. And with the 25th pick we could possibly get DE like Jarvis Moss from Florida or Anthony Spencer from Purdue. Then just resign Duckett and start Betts?? This might be worth a seperate thread...
I moved to Florida from DC 7 years ago (I'm moving back this July thank God), and I don't have the benefit of any Redskins radio. I heard Adalius Thomas is very high on our radar as well?? Can anyone confirm?
holcknowsbest 02-27-2007, 07:02 PM Agreed that Portis IS a Gibbs back, that's whay JG made the trade for him.
But you're wrong about zone blocking; the Skins didn't employ any until midseason 06. There was an article in the Wash. Post about it & I remember discussing it here. Bugel was resistant to it but Saunders likes it.
The beneficiary of zone blocking was Betts, he had some huge holes to hit. Wait till we see Portis hit those kind of holes!! Cross your fingers that we re sign Dock!
at least we are close to the same page freddy...but they did run zone blocking in 05, ill take you to the bank on that. when you hear the term stretch runs which is what they went to in 05 that is just a way of saying zone blocking...bugges did resist at first but they found that clinton was not patient enough to run thier man on man counter treys so they went to the zone blocking schemes he excelled in denver, 1 cut and go.
enough of that topic, all this talk at corner, which i agree we need help with but safety is a huge concern. i say keep springs because he really has played great when healthy. dre bly would be a hell of a pick up at the right price. thier are also some good corners in this draft like chris houston. i wouldnt mind that draft day deal with the jets that everyone is hyping and getting vilma and then at number 25 getting chris houston. i would personally go for a safety in free agency unless you canget laron landry from lsu after trading back to get more picks. some free agent safeties might me dwight smith from minn or ken hamlin from seattle.
holcknowsbest 02-27-2007, 07:05 PM i only go through with the deal with the jets if it is ladell betts not portis who we are trading.

Portis for Vilma MAYBE, but if they want Portis and the Skins to move down 19 picks in the first round they're on crack! That's a horrible trade. That better be Portis and the 6 for Vilma, the #25 and their 2nd and maybe 4th/5th round picks. That would be a horrible deal for the Skins. If that happens my fan card might get turned in!

I agree. They'd have to sweeten the pot with another decent pick or two. But Vilma is only 24, and has proven he's a great leader, he has played with several Redskins at the U, and he's a tackling machine. He can be a perennial candidate for defensive MVP. I believe he is the next great middle linebacker in the NFL. Portis is the man and all, but draft picks aside, I'd rather have a Vilma than CP 1 for 1. Especially with Betts already resigned for a much smaller contract than Portis has. Plus we have the ability to bring Duckett back as well should Portis leave.
