ESPN.com - NFL - Sources: Chargers will hire Turner as next head coach (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2771126)

This seems like a gutless hire. I guess AJ Smith talked to everyone, and picked the guy he could walk all over.

Way to make a 14-2 team a 9-7 team.

Norv and Marv seem to follow each other around a lot. It's too bad. I like Rivers and Tomlinson

If they hire someone good as their DC they'll be alright. I still think Norv is a good OC. It's really hard to up stage a 14-2 record though.

They're looking at Ted Cotrell to be their defensive coordinator I believe. That's a good choice.

Don't know if this was a "gutless hire" as much as it was the hiring of one of the very few experienced NFL head coaches still left out there. Take Parcells and Cowher out of the mix; they are going to collect their coaching money next year in addition to some TV money; going to the Chargers would be a pay cut for both of them.

Forget Pete Carroll, he wasn't gonna leave USC for the Chargers job.

And forget Jim Mora Jr. whose Falcons' teams got worse and worse with each passing year.

So, the pickings get slim if you are looking for experience. And since so many of the SD assistant coaches are "new to their jobs", experience had to be one of the things the Chargers were looking for.

No way Norv matches 14-2 next year; then again 14-2 is hard to match. Lete me put it this way. Norv Turner will look just fine as a coach as long as LT, Antonio Gates, Philip Rivers and Shawne Merriman play in all 16 games next year...

I think there is some truth to this. But Norv put the offense in back in 01 so this makes some sense. I think Norv will do fine in SD cause everything is in place. All he has to do is run the offense. They will bring a DC that knows the 3-4. But 14-2 is going to be tough to duplicate.

All that being said, then why not Dennis Green. Experienced and lives in San Diego
