Didn't see this posted anywhere. Looks like Smooty wasn't considered as good as we thought per JaLaCa.
I know a lot of the bloggy peeps are also pondering a return of Silky Johnson, AKA Smootie (or Smootster as Coach Joe once called him). I have to say I don't see this happening, but I'm not entirely ruling it out, either. He wasn't a huge favorite of the coaches when he was here, but the players liked him. Even some of the players closest to him, however, said that Smoot never quite mastered the system and was miffed by a defensive scheme that was built more around the LB and safeties; corners play the run and the underneath stuff but the safeties make a lot of plays on the ball downfield. Also, there was a sentiment by some that Smoot may have been able to play the final game of the 2004 season against the Vikes - his future employer - but did not want to push it (I find this nuts, because the dude played in some serious pain the season before with the sternum injury and all).
