Whoever the best player is then take that person. Regarless of position unless it's a QB or RB. The last time we drafted for need we took Carlos Rogers instead of Shawn Merriman or DeMarus Ware. Drafting for need gets you nowhere. If Branch is there and he is the best player then take him. If Charles Johnson slips and he is the best player at 6, which he would be, then take him. We are not good enough to be drafting by need.

Branch or Okeye. Branch REALLY impresses me with his speed and his ability to totally control the line of scrimmage by himself. Okeye also caught my eye. He's what, 18? And he's THAT good NOW!? Jesus....I think either would be a good choice seeing as how badly our D is hurting in areas. CB is next spot to be looked @.

Okoye intrigues me. He's a smaller DT, but that type of player has had success recently.

I still went Branch though. IMO, hes better. Branch is the one guy on that list that I would rather have than a trade down.

It has to be Alan Branch, the only guy thats better than him in this draft is Calvin Johnson and there is no chance he falls to us. We need to use this pick, not trade back for a couple of average players. Take Alan Branch and draft a DE in the first round next year. We could team Alan Branch and Kedric Golston for the next ten seasons, and this will make our LB and our DB much much better.

I went with Okoye (hopefully after falling back to the 11th or 12th pick). He's 19 freaking years old, and is already a monster. I see him growing into the league.

Gotta' be Branch. How sweet would it be to rush only the down lineman, and still pressure the QB? That leaves lots of other guys for GW's mischief!This is a great suggestion/point. I think its reasonable to assume that this season Gregg Williams was trying to become far less blitz dependant this season with the signing of Carter. I think he realizes that statistically, the blitz is a play on which you are going to give up more yards per play than a play where a team rushes four. A play where a team blitzes isn't more likely to produce an interception. Quite simply, the blitz is a play that teams use to get some pressure on the QB when the front four aren't getting it done.

I suspect GW figured that the combination of Saleve'a, Griffin, Daniels and Carter could get to the QB consistently without a blitz. It worked...to an extent. Carter commanded double teams when we four man rushed. In my estimation, last season our blitzes were pretty effective because of the presences on the defensive line. Players like Wynn or Daniels could get to the QB or at least draw double teams. It just seems like anytime GW dialed up a blitz this season, Carter became a non factor. Instead of using the speed rush, he was relagated to rush an interior gap, and simply didn't have the skills to make an impact. Thus this season, we'd blitz and get beat in the secondary because the pressure would never get there.

Carter wasn't the only factor, but if we are going to play with him at end, we have to start moving away from the blitz and rely on his pass rushing skills.

i voted for brach but the only thing i have againt that is maybe we should see what we have in montgomery/golston. its very possible that one could emerge as a playmaker. odds are they wont but its still very possible

I mean, we are going to need to replace Griffin in one, maybe two years tops. Maybe by that point, one is a player. If not, we could always hit up free agency.

In my mind, Branch would have the biggest impact on our defense of any of the draft prospects. However, I am not totally convinced that drafting Branch would be the best use of the 6th overall pick.

As has been said repeatedly by many, we might best be served if we can find a way to trade down and nab two defenders (e.g., Patrick Willis and a DB or DT). We simply have an abundance of holes in our defense at every level. We need not only quality starters, but quality depth that can step in when (not if) starters start to get bitten by the injury bug.
