But we humans are aware that we're animals, I have doubts that a horse is really aware of himself in anything more than a physical sense; unless, of course, that horse is Mr. Ed.

Barbaro won six straight races and was on his way to winning the triple crown. We haven't seen a horse run like him since Seattle Slew. There was a lot invested in him and people were excited about it. It takes decades to find a horse like that, with that much talent... it is a loss, no matter how you look at it - animal or not.

So if I understand you correctly, Schneed, you don't give a dman if I die??

Man you're a hard ass:(

No, I would. I don't know you, so it would be no personal loss, obviously. But I'd empathize with your family.

I'd miss your cheery posts though.

Just like your last post, I agree with you on this. I feel bad when I hear about strangers passing away mainly because I either empathize with their family's grief or I feel sorry that their life was cut short (which is how some people seem to be feeling about the horse).
Likewise, I feel bad when a [human] athlete gets injured his/her career is cut short because I know how hard they work and I know about all the emotions that are associated with sports. These athletes have goals and aspirations that can be cut short so quickly and it's sad to see when it does happen.

"Barbaro's final resting place could be just a few hundred yards from the scene of his greatest triumph in the Kentucky Derby."

I like to picture Jesus in a tuxedo t-shirt, because it says "I want to be formal but I'm here to party." - Mike Honcho
