dmek25 01-15-2007, 06:50 AM would all the redskin fans out there that wish the skins were 14-2 this season, please raise their hands? thats what i thought. everyone also said bill cowher couldn't win the big one, until last season, now everyone wants him as their coach. i wish he had never left. he definitely had the skins moving in the right direction
skinsguy 01-15-2007, 09:07 AM Gotta say though, if you're team consistently wins each and every year, like alot of Marty's teams did with Cleveland, KC, and now SD, I'd be happy knowing that he brings respect to a franchise. However, he's never been able to take any team all the way. I do believe it must be a curse on him or something. He couldn't even get there with Joe Montana (although he was an aging Joe Montana.)
Beemnseven 01-15-2007, 09:24 AM Tossing the Red Flag to challenge that fumble was absurd. Going for it on 4th down instead of kicking the field goal with a All Pro, Glad he is gone.
Marty can't win - literally. If he goes for the field goal, he gets accused of being to conservative. Instead, he does what he never does in the playoffs - he plays aggressive.
He's as cursed as Belichick is charmed. The headbutt, the fumbles, the dropped passes - all are things that rarely happened in the regular season. Not saying he's blameless, all coaches are responsible to a certain extent for everything that happens on the field.
I feel sorry for him.
firstdown 01-15-2007, 09:30 AM At first I was think that you can't blame the fumbles and penalties on Marty, but to a degree you can. The GM doesn't get a free pass on them either.
What I saw was that the Chargers had the talent and offensive and defensive gameplans to win that game. The problem is that a few guys played tight or stupid. The headbutt penalty cost the Chargers the game. That is a stupid player being undisiplined. Fault order - player, GM, coach. Also, you can't really coach people not to fumble, but you can remind them to protect the ball, and you can find ways to make the guys, who are playing to tight, relax a little. Going from 15 turnovers all season to 4 in this game proves that the guys were to tight and that has to go on the coach.
Bottom line, Marty isn't the offensive guy or the defensive guy. He is the guy in charge of making sure his guys are disiplined, physically, and mentally prepared. He missed on two out of three. The head butt was stupid but not the reason they lost. The fumbled punt then the guy tries to pick it up, just as dumb as the head butt. The fumbles and droped balls also did them in.
skinsfan69 01-15-2007, 10:31 AM Stupid thread.
I'm sure most of us would have rather have seen Marty stay here instead of Spurrier.
VERY VERY stupid thread. Anyone who knows football knows that Marty is a very solid NFL coach. Alot of the stuff that went on yesterday is out of the coaches control. Dropped passes, personel fouls and fumbles on INT's are not the coaches fault.
saden1 01-15-2007, 10:43 AM Marty didn't even have a head set on. The man didn't lose the game, the players coughed up the ball way too many times. I will say this though, going for it on 4th down was stupid but then again he wouldn't have done that in the past and this time he took a chance. The truth is, when it comes to Marty damned if you do, damned if you don't.
In any case if the Chargers fire him they are retarded.
As many bad decisions that he's made in the playoffs he's been just as cursed with pure bad luck. Marty is still a quality coach.
Redskins_P 01-15-2007, 12:08 PM Take away that headbutt, and that game would've been totally different IMO. Thats not Marty's fault at all. I can only blame him for the challenge on the int/fumble, but that didn't cost them the game. It was the stupid penalties and dropped passes.
Sucks because I was rooting for SD and Marty. I kinda feel bad for him.
FRPLG 01-15-2007, 12:40 PM Numbers don't lie. Marty is a get you close coach. But Spurrier is a get you nowhere coach and I'd rather Marty had stuck around long enough to get us close and get fired and then someone come in a win a SB for us. I am betting that's what happens in SD sometime in the next few years.
brent 01-15-2007, 03:34 PM Yeah, it'd really have sucked going 14-2 this year, if for no other reason than I have a good hunch which division rival would have swept us.
