If you believe the reports coming out of San Diego, Marty Schottenheimer's job may be in jeopardy if the Chargers lose their game against the Patriots this weekend.

Say what? The Chargers were 14-2 this year! The team with the overall best record in the NFL doesn't automatically win the Super Bowl; if they did, the Super Bowl would have become really uninteresting long before this.

Is Marty Schottenheimer the best coach in the history of the NFL? Of course not. Is he one of the five best coaches in the league at the moment? Yes he is.

Supposedly, he and the GM in San Diego are feuding and that's why he could be gone if they lose this weekend. Excuse me, but this is where a sane and rational and strong owner needs to step in and explain to these two guys that they better start to get along with each other or the owner will arrange for each of them to get an ice-water enema.

Even Danny Boy and his front-office menagerie wouldn't fire a coach who was 14-2 - - would they?

From what I've heard the owner, Mr. Spanos I believe, has decided that A.J. Smith has done a remarkable job putting together the talent on the team (him and Dr. Nick-Shawne Merriman's personal physician) and that anyone (even Marty) should be able to lead this team to a Super Bowl win.

So, knowing that these guys just don't get along he may send Marty on his way if he can lead this group to Miami. If he is canned, I'd expect former Redskin coach Cam Cameron to get serious consideration.

If Mr. Spanos believes it's that easy to get to the Superbowl, he's in for a rude awakening. If he fires Marty, he'll be implying that Marty doesn't deserve credit for the team's success (or not as much as the GM). I hope he does it, just so I can see it blow up in his face. What a douchebag.

Last year the chargers could have easyly went 14-2 if they didn't lose 6 close games. Marty did a heck of a job and I'm pretty sure if he leaves the Chargers will average at best.

I wonder how the players feel about this? You would think that after the success they've had recently that they would be supporting Marty all the way.

Its almost like the owner knows that Marty (due to his history) won't bring them a SB trophy ever.

I believe he has already done this before. Last year he had to settle some differences that had come out into the media. I think the porblem is that Marty is not the easiest guy to deal with and Smith is a total douche bag from I can tell. Unfortunately each is pretty good but they hate each other.

This would be the dumest move the Chargers could make. If the fire Schottenheimer I bet the crumble really fast in the next 2 years.
