Fair enough, but the NFL is an owners league. Players have little or no leverage to get fair pay other than to request a trade or to sit out. Baseball has an arbitration process that ensures that players are fairly compensated. Football players basically get screwed if they outperform their contract. Furthermore, teams also have the leverage when a player underperforms as the team can simply "cut" a player and not honor their contract to the player. It works both ways.

If contracts in the NFL were guaranteed, then I would agree with you that it unfair for players to renegotiate in the media.

I would agree with you if they got paid what a normal person gets paid. They get paid on potential, and they get paid if they get injured or under perform.
If they get cut, they still get the signing bonus.

I would like someone to sign me to a 5 year 35 mil contract with a 7 mil signing bonus. I will never play a down and I am still set for life. For LIFE! They get paid millions upon millions to play a game. They need to see themselves as lucky...not deserving.

Not only that, I think there's still sentiment around the league that he could be a system back, flourishing only in just the right schemes.

I don't know if you are right but if there are people who think this then they are retarded. A system back who has suceeded in 2 different schemes over the course of four seasons? When does it become the back and not the system?

In CP's situation (i don't know for sure w/out doing research) but he was most likely making 1/2 mill or so a year. Yea, good money but not enough to set you up after football, which is what most players want.

For example, Javon Walker, last year sat out of Packer camp b/c he was getting paid $400k a year approx. He wound up playing for GB and busting his knee up. Gone for the year and was able to come back and sign a FA contract. What if it was a career ending injury? Again, i see both sides.

The Broncos already have the Bell Brothers. And don't they need to find a CB now?

You're so insensitive!

Didn't Clinton hate Denver. Didn't he bast them after the trade? Clinton is going to be our next president and will be here for the long run.

He's only 25.

Age isn't the issue, his contract is.

I was just about to bring up the same point. Portis is still you ng and just entering his Prime. This is when we need him the most.

If the Redskins can even muster the cap room needed to trade Portis...wouldn't they most likely use that cap room to add some free agents rather than to trade away a young player that they like?
