Beemnseven 01-08-2007, 04:16 PM I think the skins would have a hard time trading CP. He older, dinged up and costs a lot of $. Thats the kind of player the skins love but most teams shy away from those types of players.
If the skins could unload CP I'd love to see them get a bunch of draft picks.
Me too, but it won't happen. And age might not be the issue, but his mileage is.
Not only that, when Gibbs came back, he brought along two, personally hand-picked guys to build a winning franchise. We saw what it took for him to admit that one of those guys, Mark Brunell, had seen better days. Portis was the guy he was right about. So why would he get rid of him, when it took heaven and earth for him just to bench Brunell?
jsarno 01-08-2007, 04:18 PM Thanks for the links.
Wasn't Portis unhappy in Denver anyway? Didn't they maintain he wasn't worth what he was asking? I thought that bridge was a pile of ashes at this point.
Well, that is misleading. Portis had a signed contract for another year at the low (relatively speaking) salary he signed as a rookie. He felt he deserved a new contract, the Broncos felt they signed him to a contract already so he should have honored it. I think the Broncos did the right thing. I get sick of players trying to renegotiate their contracts.
irish 01-08-2007, 04:19 PM He's only 25.
Age isn't the issue, his contract is.
I know he's only 25 but he's been in the league what 5 years. Thats a longtime. The contract is the key issue but combined with the mileage on his body and the fact that he's dinged makes him a hard sell.
12thMan 01-08-2007, 04:20 PM It's funny how the Portis rumors and speculation are starting to come up now.
Beemnseven 01-08-2007, 04:21 PM Objectively speaking, what is Portis worth to the rest of the league?
I mean, I know how we as fans see him -- face of the franchise, worth two #1 picks... blah, blah.
I can't help but to think that if you put yourself in the shoes of other general managers, he might look like damaged goods.
mooby 01-08-2007, 04:22 PM He's been in the league 4 years. That is not a long time for all the other marquee players in this league. If he was some backup barely hanging onto a roster spot, then yeah it'd be a long time. And i for one will come out and say I would not feel comfortable with Ladell Betts in a starting role. Not after all the fumbles at crucial moments, or the health issues.

Damaged goods at 25 years old with three 1500+ seasons under his belt in this league?
If his contract was more conducive to trading him I could see a few teams have some strong interest in him.

I think it's funny that in spite of all the sneaky double talk that has occured around the Redskins organization over the last several years, that there are still people that think there's no truth to this situation whatsoever.

I think Portis is definetly, even at the age of 25, worth a 1st rounder and maybe a little more.
As far as damaged goods, well he's only been hurt this year.
