True. People forget that Rypien was the QB when Monk, Clark and Saunders all got over 1,000 yards. I think it was in 89 when we went 10-6 but didn't make the playoffs.

Another thing I heard that I miss hearing was Frank Herzog and his call whenever the Redskins scored a touchdown....I know toward the end he would miss player names and wasn't perfect but just something about growing up and hearing "Sonny, Sam, and Frank". Now it's Sonny, Sam, and...Larry?

That was really good. It's hard to think that was 16 years ago. That's what a JG's offense is supposed to look like. Some of the stories about Jack Kent Cooke were great. He affected so many peoples lives. He also had a great motivation to win. His motivation spurred on Gibbs, Rypien, and the team (not that they needed any more motivation).

Gotta love Cooke calling out Rypien in the paper. " He's a bloody idiot"

You might want to thank Ritchie Petibone too. Gibbs pretty much left the defense alone. For some reason Ritchie never seems to get any credit. One of the best DC's of all time.

Petibone always had a knack of running the perfect blitz just as a team had reached the edge of field goal range late in the game. I don't think they blitzed much, but when they did -- they were as good at that as Rypien was on the deep ball. I think to most Redskin fans, the playcalling was a bit predictable but the opposition never seemed to catch on.

That year, the running game had gone MIA (I think someone got injured?) and Gibbs called them into his office and said, "I'm turning it over to you guys to pull this out the season for us." They passed their brains out and did well, but still too many Rypien fumbles (he had a big problem fumbling) and mistakes proved too hard to overcome. Gibbs later said that experience convinced him that he couldn't win that way and he had to get the running game going again.

In the NFL Network video, they say that the Eagles "bodybag" game refocused the Redskins on being tougher and more physical.

I just wonder if any other team had won it all during one of those strike seasons would they still have considered it a "stolen Superbowl"? I'll bet not!

But that WAS the knock on Gibbs prior to 1991. "He's never gone through the entire season and won the big one." The 1987 team received 3-0 from their strike players (See "The Replacements" for accurate historical details...) including a win over Dallas. The 82 team was dependant on a big old running back (Rig-something) who might not have lasted a full season.

So when they destroyed the league in 1991, grabbed the #1 seed, and rode it to a Superbowl win...well, it was quite unexpected. Nearly the entire season, the showdown between the Bills and the Redskins -- BY FAR the dominant teams in the league -- was anticipated. I bet there have been very very few times the two #1 seeds met in the Superbowl. This was a very rare occasion that a #1 seed beat a #1 seed for the title.

i was at the regular season game between the skins and falcons where rypien put on a clinic to the falcons defense.mc hammer and evander holyfield were
both on the falcon sideline that day,the section i was end started alternating chants of hammer sucks and holyfields sucks.it was a very shitty day to see a game too,rain,sleet,freezing rain all fell that game.and it was one hell of a drive from dc to bassett that night too.only paid 10 bucks for my ticket though!and we got to see the falcons rookie qb that year number 4 brett favre throw an interception andre collins ran back 20 yards for a touchdown.other than seeing rypien's
clinic that day,we got to see favre an sure fire HOFer play that day too!
